From most hyper-competitive to most laid-back, how would you rank Berkeley, LA, and San Diego?

“hyper-competitive” -CAL
2nd-LA
3rd-SD

1st- Berkeley
2nd- UCSD
3rd- UCLA

I’d say Cal, UCLA, UCSD.

Cal, ucla, ucsd

Nick just said that to be contrary. Well done, Nick.

1) Merced
2) Chica state
3) Stanford

%)

It’s actually a toss up in some majors for UCLA and Berkeley, but usually Berkeley is a bit more competative with incoming freshman. So i would say 1. Berkeley 2. UCLA 3. UCI 4. UCSD. UCI is the legitimate third best UC in the state. UCSD has gone down with it’s reputation for partying, drug scandals, admission blunders etc…

W T F? Where did you get this? Of course everyone knows about the admissions blunders, but partying and drug scandals? I think you’re referring to SDSU…

UCI? WTH? It’s a real leap to say that it’s better than UCSD. Actually, it’s pretty ridiculous.

UCI is about even with UCD and UCSB. I wouldn’t say that UCI is even the legitimate 4th best. Personally, I think Davis is better, but it’s really just opinion on which is 4th.

UCSD has always been renown for students who study endlessly and super smart science whiz kids. If we were to judge only the physical and life science majors, then UCSD would easily outrank UCLA. And if anything, UCSD is definitely one of the lesser “party schools” in the UC system. Ask around if Cal or UCLA are more competitive than UCSD because the kids there party less or use drug less or because the administration made less admissions blunders (I fail to see how making admissions blunders have anything to do with the school’s competitiveness), people will most likely disagree with you.

Have nothing against UCI other than the fact that it’s in the middle of a retirement neighborhood. But to say that it’s a ** legit ** third best UC is kind of a baseless statement. If one was to judge a school’s competitiveness based on how much the students party or use drugs, then UCSB should be at the bottom of the chart while UCM or UCI is placed near Berkeley.

Edit: eh, I shouldn’t pick on Merced. They need a break ;P

I think the poster just confused SDSU with UCSD. And dhl3 is right on with the partying not necessarily inversely related with strong academics. As a UCSB grad, I had to work pretty hard too :)

…who said there is sub-par partying and no drug scandals at UCSD? science majors really know how to utilize the green, if you know what i mean… ;)

but yes, i concur - UCI = the third best UC? Funny…

UCI is the third best UC, there is no question about it. It is improving every single day and there are so many talented students. Even if you don’t think so, just watch, you’ll see.

UCI third best UC? The rankings speak for themselves. UCSD is the third best UC hands down according to all reputable ranking systems.

My gardener went to UCSD. Smart guy, but he wishes he went to UCI where people actually have souls.

Obviously the people saying UCI is #3 go there or know someone who goes there…but we all know that is a load of crap. UCSD will always own UCI in basically everything academic. I mean I give UCI props for their athletics most notably men’s baseball and volleyball (national champions), but they will never surpass UCSD when it comes to academia especially in relation to the sciences…not to say that their sciences aren’t good, it’s a GREAT school. But the reality is, UCI consists of all the kids who don’t get into Cal, UCLA, and UCSD (I’ve got around 50 friends who went to Irvine…and I only know one who passed up Cal, UCLA, UCSD to go there, and that was because she got a scholarship for a full ride)…here is how I rank them overall as a school (not specific fields/majors), I think most would agree with me.

UC Berkeley

UCLA

UCSD

UCI (Tie between Irvine and Davis)

UC Davis

UCSB (They party too much)

UCSC

UCR

UCM

As for competitiveness rank it would in my opinion be:
- UC Berkeley (my sis went there and I have many friends who go there…I’ve heard their horror stories, and I believe them…one of the most competitive in the nation, if not #1)
- UCSD (This is tough, because it really depends on your major…but UCSD is renown for nerdy kids who study all week long)
- UCLA (Not to say it isn’t competitive, but academics isn’t everything here. UCLA has more well rounded kids who actually have a life outside books)…I’m going to UCLA in the fall…very excited! =)

There is a 5% difference in acceptance rate between SD and UCI. There is a 17% difference in acceptance rate between SD and UCLA.
There is a 15 ranking difference between SD and Cal. There is a difference of 9 rankings between irvine and SD.

You have no idea what you are talking about. NEVER mention UCLA or CAL in the same breath as UCSD. UCSD is where all the LA rejects go.

I will have to disagree with you apple. If you don’t get into Berkeley or UCLA, its all based on taste and preferences. Its just that I prefer Irvine over SD. UCSD students were CAL/LA rejects as well so they just so happened to go to SD and not Irvine. In the end, the opportunities after college are the same for the two schools. No need to complicate things.

Before we discuss this matter further, let’s distinguish between “academic reputation” and “competitiveness”. While the two may be correlated, they can’t be used synonymously. Competitiveness describes the vibe of the learning environment of the students while the academic reputation describes more of the quality of the education offered by the professors.
