UC San Diego or UC Berkeley

My parents more than me are very apprehensive about the fact that UC Berkeley offers a BA degree for computer science and therefore take more kindly to the UCSD program. Can anybody tell me if the difference in distinction will have an effect on my future job endeavors. My parents are pretty sure that if I am pitted up against someone that has a BS degree I will surely loose the job. I went to Triton day and I was more than happy with the university but my heart's at Berkeley. At the same time I don't want nicer dorms, better surroundings, and prestige to be the deciding factor. If a BS degree opens more doors I am more than willing to go to UCSD. Any opinions!!

Pretty sure it doesnt really matter what the name of the degree is, but of what you know.

EDIT: Seems like Berkeley offers both a BS and a BA in computer science. Try looking it up yourself.

A BS will be much better than a BA if you plan on getting a job right after you graduate, and can often help with getting into graduate school too. I’m fairly certain the CS major at Berkeley depends on what college you got into. L&S only offers a BA and EECS offers the BS. A BS is usually more difficult to get and tells employers that you worked harder in college and took a harder courseload.

If the difference is a handful of classes, I doubt it matters. Real-world experience is going to help you way more than having an extra thing or two on your transcript.

Berkeley only offers a BA in chemistry, whereas UCSD only offers a BS. Trust me, if everything else is the same, an employer’s going to pick the Berkeley grad. They’re worked … differently up there.

Astrina is 100% correct. Regardless of the type of degree, a Berkeley degree will usually get the job. I was saying from a same school perspective. If an employer received a BA and a BS from Berkeley under the same major, the BS would have a more likely shot of getting picked. Unless, of course, the BA grad worked a lot, had copious amounts of research, and other such leg-ups.

I think the distinction between a BA and a BS has more to do with each school. For example, UCSD offers both a BA and BS in Computer Science. If you were to get a BA from UCSD it might not look as favorably compared to a BS from UCSD. But for Berkeley they only offer a BA in CS (From what I understand they only gives BA’s in L&S). You can get a BS if you partner it with Electrical Engineering, but then you really should compare that to other EECS degrees. Since EECS and CS share the same CS classes there is no difference in the CS education you’ll receive. A BA from Berkeley has less to do with the rigor of the degree (Compared to other schools) and more to do with their own system.

When it comes down to it Berkeley is a world renowned school, one of the top CS schools, and the top UC. Employer’s assume you received an excellent education there. If a employer thinks a BA from Berkeley is somehow less then a BS from UCSD you probably don’t want to work for that company. Also know that UCSD is considered an excellent school too. Berkeley might give your resume extra consideration but in the end it will be up to you to prove that you’ve learned something.

Berkeley is amazing for Computer Science, and employers know that. That isn’t to say that UCSD is bad. However, just know that nobody is going to reject your resume because you got a BA in Computer Science from Berkeley. It sounds like you really want to go there so go for it!

you’re going to be working your butt off in both places. make sure your choice of campus reflects what you want when you’re NOT stuck in the basement, coding and eating ramen for three days straight.

my brother’s doing CSE at irvine and my sister’s doing CS at berkeley right now … makes me feel left out =/
