Does anyone know the admission status for bio-psychology? How hard is it to get into the major?

UCSB does not admit by major to the College of Letters and Sciences but you are admitted into a Pre-major status for Biopsychology. You then need to take the required courses to fully declare the major.

Use the 27% admit rate for the majors listed in the College of Letters and Sciences. (87816 applicants and 23540 admitted for 2022).

Biopsychology Major

The Biopsychology BS major is designed to guide students through the requirements of a Bachelor of Science degree. First, students work on the pre-major courses to qualify for joining the full major. Should they meet the requirements of the pre-major, students must then declare for the full major in order to eventually complete their degree.

Major Course Requirements

The Biopsychology BS major has 4 parts: Area I, Area II, Area III (also known as Preparation for the Major), and Upper Division. Please also review the major rules & regulations below.

Area I: Pre-Major Requirements (Part 1 of 2)

The following courses require a 2.7 UC GPA before admittance to the full major:

  • PSY 1 - Introduction to Psychology (4 units)
  • MATH 34A (or 3A or 2A) - Calculus I (4 units)
  • PSTAT 5A (or 5LS or COMM 87) - Statistics (5 units)
  • PSY 10A - Research Methods in Psych & Brain (5 units)
  • PSY 10B - Statistical Methods in Psych & Brain (5 units)

Area II: Pre-Major Requirements (Part 2 of 2)

The following courses require a 2.0 UC GPA before admittance to the full major:

  • CHEM 1A-B (or 2A-2B) - General Chemistry (6 units)
  • MCDB 1A and EEMB 2 - General Biology (7 units)
  • *CHEM 1C is a pre-requisite for MCDB 1A & EEMB 2 series.

Competitive to get into. I know UCSB doesn’t admit by major but was just curious if anyone had relevant stats on it.

Interesting. Where did you find the admit rate by college and is this information typically available for all UCs?

Our particular high school’s acceptance rate is a good bit lower than the 27%, yikes. Just looked and the past two year it was 21% and 18%, respectively. A school across the bay from us is like twice as high gahhhhhhhh. Trying to remind myself that daughter already has 4 great UCs to pick from and we can’t be greedy, but I know she wants this one. :frowning:

UW 3.6, W 4.1, UC GPA 3.92
In-state
9 APs, 2 Honors
Decent PIQs, plenty of ECs, leadership, p/t job

WL at UCSC (CS major), UCI (Comp Eng major)
UCR (CSBA major), CPP (CS), Cal Poly SLO (CS) - still waiting decision but not hopeful
Admitted to SJSU (Comp Eng), and for CS at SFSU, Chico, CSUF, Oregon State, ASU.

Very glad that we applied widely across Cal States…at this point D and us are more relieved than anything else as we get closure on all these applications one way or the other.

Daughter waitlisted. Will consider that a soft rejection and move on. Looks like it’s a hard admit from our high school. Congrats to those admitted!

Was she also WL for UCSD & UCI

Seems like the state has it out for me, every in state uni I applied to has rejected outside of CPP which didn’t give me my major, yet every OOS flagship that I applied to except for UIUC and UDub accepted me, and financial issues make them meaningless
