UC Santa Cruz 2023 Applicant Discussion Thread

@montanatocali First of all, this is not your traditional party school. You’re not just going to walk around campus and stumble into a good party, you have to know people. They’re the ones who will tell you if there’s a party at a dorm, in the forest or downtown. (Don’t get caught by CSOs, its not horrible but it is a hassle)

So without knowing you, I’d say look into Porter.(just be aware that their dining hall is shlt) Also Porter is right next to Empire Cave / Hell Hole and as far as I’m aware, there’s always a party in there. I’d also imagine there’s gamers everywhere on campus so you don’t have to be a crownie or a merrill affiliate. I mean I know my neighbors at Oakes have video game tournaments with each other like every day. Also, I don’t think I’ve met someone who hates Porter, I’ve met people who get annoyed at the constant yelling of POOORTER! but I have that issue with people yelling the Oakes chant into the void and having people from across the college chant it back and that’s been fine.

As for Kresge, they’re undergoing a renovation which starts in the fall meaning there will be a lot of construction in the area. They’re updating the buildings, adding 100-200 new beds and I believe they’re also renovating the academic building so by the end of it Kresge will be the most updated college. The thing about Kresge though is that since you cannot have a car until you’re a junior (I mean you could always pay for parking to one of the churches) you’ll have to use the bus to go buy groceries, the Kresge Co-op is an option but I feel that’s more for a quick round of groceries.

My son was admitted to UCSC earlier this week. OOS

I see a lot of concern about the student housing crisis, this article gives you some insight to the fight between the university and students.

Would anyone mind chancing my son? I am new here. His gpa is 3.73 UC. 27 ACT. 1230 SAT. 4 years of basketball including a state championship. Captain. Recruited athlete. Volunteer hours. In State. Some AP courses. Not a ton. Major is physical science undeclared or human science undeclared. I felt his personal insight questions were good. His friend has received an early acceptance (his stats are way higher). My son did not.

@slugwithtea at Kresge - can u still do the dining program? Or do u have to make your own food? eek

@montanatocali You can definitely buy a meal plan!

you have a couple options
-7 day meal plan- unlimited dining all week
-5 day meal plan- unlimited dining monday-friday
-55 meal plan per quarter - you have 55 swipes at the dining hall so about 5 swipes a week
-Slug Club Meal - you buy a slug card at the dining hall in increments of 5 meals

You could also use your flexis to get into the dining hall but prices vary depending on the type of meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner or college night) If you don’t know what flexis are, one flexi is equivalent to 1 dollar and you start every quarter with $50 that you pay in the tuition/fees cost. They can be used at the Express store, dining hall, cafes/restaurants on campus and some stores like CVS, Woodstock’s and Pizza My Heart which are all downtown.

@slugwithtea ok so u can eat at the dining halls as a Kresge resident, you just also get the option to cook in your own kitchen if you want… which I would bet few do  Is the walk to there dining has THAt bad? Or just a few mins in either direction… sounds pretty reasonable.

Is Porter mostly transfers? He thinks Cowell sounds pretty centralized, good food options, close to class… win win?

@montanatocali Walking from point A to point B on campus takes at most 30 minutes (I usually take 20 min but am a fast walker) So whatever dining hall you want to eat at won’t be a far walk. I think the dining hall is like 5-10 minute walk from your dorm depending on whether the dining hall in on your college or your sister college.

Theres 10 colleges but 5 dining halls. The dh are located at Porter, Cowell, Crown, RCC and C10.
The main dining halls, i.e the ones open the longest, during the weekend and during holidays are RCC, Cowell and C10.

I think that the main dining halls are the best and most people would agree that Porter sucks, and Crown is the place to be at if you’re vegan as they have a huge salad bar and the most vegan friendly options compared to other dining halls.

And yes Porter has a lot of transfers as the transfer community is there, but still everyone loves being at Porter. (Especially for the 420 celebration where everyone smokes at the meadow creating a huge smoke cloud lmao)

I checked my portal today , and I have no message stating date or time by alphabet when admit notifications will be available. I know someone mentioned March 15th, but when will we know the time to check?

Further–my other twin, who was accepted to RIT weeks ago, did NOT send official test scores–he just self-reported…

oops–I posted to the wrong site!

Did anyone get an invitation for the Chancellor’s Reception?

Yes , my daughter got it!

@CCclassof2023 my daughter got the invitation of Chancellor Reception ! She will go!

yes, my daughter got it, too : )

Is it worth going to Chancellor’s Reception if you’re going to admitted student day?

@Gumbymom Do you know the logic behind why my D was invited to the UCSB chancellor’s reception and accepted there, but has not been admitted early or invited to the UCSC chancellor’s reception? Are the UCs targeting certain kids who they want to get excited about attending their particular campus? Are they assuming she prefers UCSB to UCSC? Just curious how this all works. Thanks!

i’m a senior whos applied to santa cruz (why im on the forum) but i live in long beach so i figured letting you know what i know about CSULB and the town in general might be beneficial for you and your daughter.
ive lived in long beach my whole life, and honestly (though im probably very bias) its an amazing city. we’re very diverse which is great. there are a million different cultures here, people from all walks of life flock to long beach. we have people from the midwest, from other countries, from norcal, its a huge melting pot. theres a great sense of community here and though there are some bad parts of the city, the place where CSULB is (i live right down the street) is our most suburban area, even though we dont really have suburbs theyre kind of like city-suburbs with amazing architecture. the area of CSULB is 10 minutes away from the beaches and about 2 hours away from mountains (big bear), we have a lot to do here(:
pretty much everyone i know is either a CSULB alum or is currently enrolled, and the only negative thing ive ever heard about it is the parking, which is kind of an ongoing joke in lb, and the fact that its a commuter school meaning not a lot of kids live on campus. but, from my friends that have dormed there, they say it’s a great experience bc you make better friends with a smaller group of people and theres a greater sense of community.
the academics are AMAZING, especially for biology. we have a shark lab, lots of research and really good professors from what ive heard. plus, if your daughter would be interested in working at our port, which is where a lot of the people that live in lb work, there are a TON of job opportunities as well as intern spots and other various programs that work with CSULB. also, we have one of the best school districts in the country, so if your daughter was looking to be a teacher or work in the school system itd be a great place to get started or have a career here.
i hope this is helpful!!
living in long beach is amazing and theres a real small town feel here even though its kind of a big city, which is probably my favorite part(:

I think good. Check the common data set for UCSC. ACT is middle and GPA is just below top 25%. So likely comes down to the intangibles and the 14 factors they look for in holistic review. Good luck! My son waiting too with a little lower stats but different ECs. My son did get into UCR already though.
