accepted for economics! but this was my top school, like i was o b s e s s e d with it, and due to specific circumstances i’m not even going (now transferring from a community college). hopefully my spot is given to someone who really wants to go
I hope those who have no intentions of going to UCSC or have better options let the school know. It gives us waitlisters a chance. Would really appreciate if those who have been waitlisted and had no intentions of going not accept the offer.

Super proud Mama, but this process is really exhausting, and hard on our kids. We need to remind them (and ourselves sometimes) that getting accepted or rejected does not define them as humans. No matter what path they choose, being kind, caring, and accepting people will get them further in life than where they got into college! Good luck to all and I know everyone will end up exactly where they’re supposed to!

@adesperateant My son was waitlisted. He doesn’t share much with us . So…Can you tell me since he has been offered acceptances at other schools OOS, what he needs to do since he thinks he still wants to be considered for UCSC? He has always talked about going out of state to school. But he finally admitted a few weeks ago that the only school here in California where we live that he would actually consider would be UC Santa Cruz. So it turns out he was waitlisted…
@calgraduclamom I’d love to ask you a couple of specific questions about your daughter’s experience at UCSC. Is there a way to direct message you through CC?
@Andreq If he is truly interested in Santa Cruz, he should stay on the waitlist AND accept an offer at another school by their deadline if he hasn’t yet heard from UCSC by then. This is what my daughter did. She then got off the waitlist at UCSC sometime in April and de-committed at the other school. She is currently an exceedingly happy UCSC freshman. Your son has every right to stay on the waitlist (and should do so) if he is at all interested in attending…he earned that right.
@Andreq that message was for people who were 100% sure they would not attend UCSC. Your son has earned the right to be on the waitlist and should definitely accept the offer if you guys are considering the school as an option. He should also accept offers at another school incase nobody gets off the waitlist. I hope my previous comment wasn’t taken the wrong way.
thanks for making that case @adesperateant many of our kids have applied to “way too many” schools and probably aren’t thinking of pro-actively turning down the schools they have been accepted to (my son has UCSC as his top in state, but is not close to a decision. All that said, he had no interest in checking the Portal before going to school, so I don’t know where he stands). No one is saying to limit top choices at this point, but it is a kindness to let the schools who are no longer in contention that they might have spots to give. Especially at competitive schools.
@adesperateant No no no! I in no way thought that your message was directed at somebody like my son. I was reaching out to you as a parent of another student who was waitlisted. Since you said yours was waitlisted too. So I’m curious what do we such as you and others whose kids were waitlisted what are the steps that have to be done to be possibly even though yes they were offered other options at other schools could still maybe have the chance of getting in? His education consultant said that he needs to write an essay? I haven’t looked at the steps that he is supposed to take if he still wants to be considered because he refuses to show them to me.
@calgraduclamom Oh yes, I know he has that right. I guess I was babbling in my message. My question is since he does not share anything with us what are the steps that he should take so that he remains in contention for UCSC? He actually is already accepted…( I know it’s not right ) to two out-of-state schools and did that back in December. He has always wanted to go to school on the East Coast but he has said the only school he would even consider staying in California for, would be if he actually got into UC Santa Cruz. His academics are far below what they actually accept due to some issues he has, which he explained in his essays, so I think his essays are probably what got them to even waitlist him. He has three friends from school who are freshman there now so he saw it in September and fell in love. So that’s why I am curious what are the actual steps he has to take so that possibly as of June which is what the website says that those who were waitlisted will find out…maybe he will find out that he was admitted? However we know we are not holding our breath because he does fall far below with his GPA and AC T what most others are getting in with. Especially for the major that he’s going into. But… It obviously is in his heart the fact that he is willing to pass up going to school on the East Coast which has always been his thoughts if he should get into Santa Cruz. His education consultant did not yet see the steps because my son did not forward it to her saying that he was having a hard time figuring it out… LOL. So she said to me when she has had students waitlisted from other UC schools but none of them have been waitlisted from Santa Cruz, she advises her students to send essays along with anything else that is stated that he needs to do from the Santa Cruz info that was sent to him.
@Andreq Hi there. I am not quite recalling (and others on this board who are currently in the process will jump on, I’m sure), but there may be a step on his UCSC portal where he needs to “accept” the waitlist offer. Some UCs have that step for the waitlist, some do not, and I’m honestly not quite remembering how Santa Cruz works theirs as my daughter ended up on several UC waitlists and the processes are all blurring. If I were you, I would sit down with him, have him log onto the portal, and look at it together and make sure you’ve done everything your’e supposed to do to remain on the waitlist. For the waitlist, you just wait – no essays, etc. If he wants to APPEAL (because you think there was something wrong or missing from his application – which is very rare, and they are very strict about grounds for the appeal), that’s another story, and you do need to submit statements and back-up information. But for the waitlist, they have what they need. They believe he is qualified enough to put him on the waitlist, and only time will tell. In the meantime, he does need to make sure he takes all of the classes he listed as “planned” for his senior year on his UC application, and keep his grades up. I hope I am answering your question!
