It’s been quiet in this thread…Wonder when will we hear from housing regarding next step. DD selected 5 colleges but her top choice is Crown and college 9. I’ve been checking on the waitlist thread because many DD’s friends are on the waitlist and she really hope couple of them can join her to UCSC. We registered for the summer orientation, it’s just one day event, I so wish that she can have an overnight experience before school started like some other schools, sounds so much fun and a good way to make some friends. I don’t understand why parent also need to pay for summer orientation.
Btw, did anyone know if students can switch to live in different colleges in sophomore years? Thanks
@jjkmom…I was wondering the same thing…why do parents have to pay? My d and I will be attending the orientation on 07/24. Her major is CS game design. What is your d’s major? Are you guys also attending on 24th?
Hi @Twins2000 my DD and I will be attending the orientation on 28th, I wanted to go on 24th but need to take my other DD to Vegas for basketball tournament while DH take my DS for Boy Scout backpacking. My DD is also majoring CS game design!! Is your DD on “schools” app? She can meet others who are attending UCSC by major or by residential colleges.
@jjkmom…I don’t think she is on the schools app…I will ask her though just to be sure. That’s so great our d’s have the same major! I have twins both going to college is year ( son going to East Coast) and my dh and I are also running around quite a bit with them…it’s been crazy!
Is someby here on the wait list on has been accepted from it?
DD received letter from housing yesterday and she got her #1 choice to live in Crown college. Her friend got denied and got his 3rd choice, because he wants a single room, is trying to appeal.
Wow, that was fast! Did she just submit her room preferences in the last day or two?
She submitted her college preferences when she sent in SIR (part of SIR process) back in late April. She can now see who else are also going to move into Crown college and can try to connect with them. It’s funny that she needs to prepare for AP exams and finals, but her mind is all about summer plan and move in day…
My DD is in the same boat - she just finished her last day of high school yesterday, but she’s so excited to be at UCSC. She also got her first choice: Rachel Carson College, and we just submitted her room preferences & meal plan info today. Exciting stuff! So much to keep track of…
@unizee thanks for the update, I didn’t know there is action to decide on the meal plan & room preference! DD probably forgot to tell me! Did you choose 5 meals or 7? DD wanted to choose just 5 meals (3 meals for 5 week day) and she will take care the weekends. I think she needs to make friends who live in apartment so she can cook.
Does anyone know how likely I am to have my housing appeal granted? I got assigned Stevenson and appealed to got to Crown.
My d got assigned to Kresge, her first choice. She likes the location and the convenience of a kitchen. I would have preferred a dorm honestly, but left it up to her. Haven’t submitted the meal plan and room preference as yet.
We chose the 7-day meal plan, just because she’ll be new there and it will ensure she has food until she gets her bearings and knows of other places to eat around town and get food. If your DD has an apartment she’ll probably be able to store and cook food much more easily.
We just finished the housing process, DD chose 5 days, she will eat at cafe or get simple grocery from downtown for the weekends. She just wants some flexibility. She is in Crown, but originally I also think she will choose Kresge because she can cook her favorite Korean ramen noodles, but she wants to experience dormitory life on the first year. I think she will apply to apartment style next year.
Anyone received anything from UCSC regarding housing or move in items? My DD’s friend from UCR already got the shopping list and place to purchase extra long bed sheets… she just can’t wait to get to know her roommates!
Nope, nothing here. When we visited the UCR campus, there was a cool shopping list in their gift bag, which I saved But d will be in Kresge which is apartment style with kitchenette. So she will have to figure out with her flatmates about the kitchen stuff.
My DD’s classmate is going to be in Kresge as well. He wants single room in Crown or college 10, but didn’t get any. He was assigned to Kresge single room and he appealed to change colleges and got rejected. My DD is actually interested in Kresge next year so she can cook.
Crown will be undergoing construction so may be noisy and having some people move around dorm complexes for 2 years more or so. Consider staying at Stevenson they have a beautiful cafeteria with a view of the ocean and closer to the gym/recreation complex.
There is a dorm list re things to bring/not bring posted online in the housing section.
I hope I know this earlier, I think it’s too late to change.
