Hello, so I am at a community college right now, and I am getting A's and B's in all my classes, except history (last semester i got a c), and french this semester(goodness knows what I am going to end up with but probably a C or B)

I am currently looking at UCLA, Berkley, UCSB or Cal Poly SLO but I want to know what would happen if I withdraw from the class and what would happen if i retook the class.

I can have my history teacher sign it off for me to retake the class and replace that grade with an R and have my new grade, but does that R factor into your GPA?

and if i were to withdraw from french and take it again next semester what would happen to my GPA?

I have to take french because I want to major in English

OH. I am so sorry, i forgot the most important part of my question!!

I also am looking at a C or B in my english PREREQ class, will the UC’s see that class because it goes on your transcript? and do prereq classes factor into your GPA aswell?

also factoring into it, sorry, i have a lot of questions…But I took a reading class that only transfers to cal states, will that class factor into my GPA for UC’s?

Being that you want to transfer to a UC and major in english, the csu transferable grades will not be factored into admission( But they will count for scholarships, =/ . Having too many withdraws looks bad so I would suggest you kick it into gear and try really hard to maintain a good gpa. They want to see consistency, especially LA and cal. You only need a 3.0 for all the other Ucs’. When are you looking to transfer?

I am looking to transfer fall 2011, my GPA at the end of this semester is going to be worst case scenario a 3.56 overall but a 3.61 without the reading (CSU transfer only) class and a 3.58 without the prerequisite class

with that said i still have 3 semesters (if you count summer) but i only have one more semester before i apply

so what I am wondering is will UCLA look at the overall GPA or the classes that transfer to UC only?

P.S. thank you for your help

honestly unless you want to desperately get into CAL or UCLA I wouldn’t retake it. that being said, if you don’t have any other withdraws it wont hurt too bad.

Figures, haha, those are the two that I want to get in the most.

In a more simple form of my question, I would just like to know what would hurt more…

An R on my transcript and an A, OR a C on my transcript?

For UCB, they will look at UCtransferable only. With LA, it depends on the major but more than likely they will only look at UC transferable unless you a communications major. I strongly believe you can make it. Join TAP, Find transfer programs…trust me…

Okay, I understand that, but the class I got a C in is part of the UC IGETC, will it look better if I repeated it and got an A or should I just keep the C on my transcript?

mylove2009: It’s interesting that for some reason nobody’s answering the most simple question that you’re asking. Although, I do agree with EastbayUCC - They only look at UC transferrable GPA.

Answer to your question: Get the R. Don’t stick with the C no matter what. They UC’s want consistency, whoever said that above is exactly right. An R doesn’t look bad. Hell even 2 R’s don’t look that bad. It’s when you have 3+ you should start worrying. Take the R, most definitely. If you want UCLA or UCB…take the R lol.

The R does not factor into your GPA whatsoever.

If you withdrew from French and take it again next semester, again, that is fine. Just be careful; you don’t want too many withdrawals. Again, this withdrawal will not factor into your GPA though.

perrrrrrfect! thank you soo soo soo soo much!

Oh wait. sorry One more question! Now, All my other classes are A’s except a B in a prerequisite class, there is nothing I can do about it now and I plan on getting an A in the next level up, but will that factor into my GPA as well because it is nontrasferable?

Mylove, is that Prerequisite UC transferable?

No, it is not. I guess that answers my question now doesn’t it. Thank you guys so much, all of you!

No problem, mylove2009. I wish you the best!

I know this matter was already resolved, but I just thought I’d share some info I was given about W’s and R’s.

Right now I have 3 R’s, and I met with a UCLA admissions counselor to see how this would affect my chances at getting into UCLA and he told me that I had nothing to worry about. He said that W’s or R’s don’t start catching admissions officer’s attention until you start getting close to the “double digits.” That still sounds *****ing crazy to me, but that’s what he told me.
