Hi From UCSC to....

Hi.

I am a freshman now in UCSC and I am interested in transfering to another UC (more academic competitive).

For the past two quarters I received GPA 3.1( including two UC transferable classes I took at CC). I took a lot of upper division classes because I didn't know those are upper division, I know those hurt my grade and I will try to bring them back up.

I am planning on taking two more classes next year at CC in addition to my UCSC courses (to help bump up my GPA).

I will finish all my lower division classes by the end of sophomore year, including the major lower division requirements and a lot of upper division classes.
My major is Literature.

So, my question is, what do you think of my plan?
Will it work?
I am aiming at SD, Davis or Irvine, and I know chances are slim but I will also apply for LA.

It’s true that your GPA is a little low right now, but as you said, it’ll go up when you start taking classes at CC and other lower division classes. Also, you have good reason (since you were taking upper division classes, that can explains the low GPA), just mention it in the personal statement, I’m sure they’ll understand. Just make sure you will do really well in the future lower division classes that you’re going to take next year! I’m sure you’ll be fine.

It never hurt to apply, so why not give it a shot?!? Apply to all UCs you’d like. Gudluck!

Hello there. Another transfer applicant from UCSC.

Okay well first, CCC classes do not count towards your transferrable GPA. Only classes taken at a UC campus are counted in your GPA. I am not sure if that raises or lowers your current GPA.

Second, it probably isn’t a great idea to blame your low GPA on ‘not knowing’ what upper division classes were. Surely you heard the counselors explain the difference and/or looked at the course guidebook? Unfortunately, the name of the game is numbers. They’ll see the upper division courseload but probably will not think too much about it. How many did you take anyways?

Keep in mind UC to UC transfers don’t get much priority and the average GPA for transfers tends to be around a 3.5. The odds are stacked against us >.<

Best of luck buddy… btw, how do you like UCSC so far?

I think ccc classes do transfer, it is weird if it doesn’t.
Although I will ask my counselor about it to make sure.

Well, for fall, I honestly do not know that I am taking an upper-division course until the middle of the first quarter.
But I manage to get an B- (bad enough to break my GPA).

Last quarter I took one other upper-devision and got an A-.
Next year I am planning to take one for each quarter.

As for how I like it here.
I have to say I love the teachers and the setting.
Its all pretty and stuff.
But I am not much of a forest, suburb person.

CCC classes that are deemed UC-transferrable do transfer. However, the letter grade does not. Though, I have heard when applying for grad school, community college grades are sometimes then factored in.

Alright, well you only took 2 upper division courses, and you actually did just fine in them. Those classes actually seem to help your GPA, since you averaged a 3.2, while only a 3.1 overall. So I am guessing most of your grades are B’s so far. That is great, but you are going to need to step up your game if you have any hope. I still do not know why you are taking upper division courses right now though. Have you completed all UD as well as GE’S?

Well I don’t like to take all GEs cause sometimes it gets borning. Also I want to be in small classes, and those are all upper divisions.
I have only two GEs left, so I’m not worried that I will not finish me GEs.
Plus, I can’t take my lower division for my major cause it requires me to pass W2, which is what I am doing right now, so yeah.
