UC Transfer PoAS Question

Hi,

I have seen a few of the UC Transfer Profile of Admitted Students, which gives information to prospective transfer students regarding the average accepted applicants and number of applicants. What surprised me (from the 2014 edition because it was removed from the 2016 edition) was that some transfer students had rather high numbers of credits. The average admitted student for one engineering major was over 120 or something…

Anyways, I was wondering why this number was so high because isn’t there is a certain number of credits you are limited to have when transferring? And there are also even probably many <70 credit students applying.

Below is the fall 2016 version:

You can have an unlimited amount of lower division courses, but they’ll cap you at 60 or 70. Beyond that, you only get subject credit.

I transfered to Cal with 100 semester units but they capped me at 70.

Will it matter if I apply with only 60 - 70 credits? Or do you think it looks better to have more credit?

My daughter had over 108 semester units, some not UC transferable. I feel that made her a more competitive applicant.

My friend’s daughter had started CCC as pre-med but switched to business econ so she had over 85 semester units. With TAP, she got into business econ at UCLA. So yes I would say it could be very helpful to have more credits especially for impacted majors.

You need the required 60 units. Any more than that, doesn’t matter. Any less than that, you’re not getting in.

Do the classes you need and keep your GPA high. I wouldn’t worry about anything beyond that.

Thanks for the replies! I will likely just apply during my sophomore year… I should be nearing 70 credits by the end of spring semester.

Applying with just 60 doesn’t lower your chances. The only diff might be if you are in a high pre-requisite major, such as engineering, and took a ton of the highly recommended courses. They do like to see those courses in engineering. But the actual units (60 or 100, etc) are irrelevant. So you’re fine with high 60s. I had exactly 60 on the nose.
