UC - Trends

Hello CC,

How favorably do UC's look at upward grade trends? My transcript is full of B's and a couple A's freshman year. Sophomore year I ended up with 1 B in math and 1 B in English. Junior year I had 1 B in AP physics. The first term of senior year I received straight A's. I am constantly getting better at school and my extracurricular start to build too starting from around sophomore year.

I know being persistent in your transcript (i.e straight A's throughout) is obviously better but at least it's an upward trend rather than a downward trend.

Freshman year UWGPA: 3.6
Freshman year WGPA: 4.02

Sophomore year UWGPA: 3.8
Sophomore year WGPA: 4.2

Junior year UWGPA: 3.9
Junior year WGPA: 4.4

Senior year UWGPA: 4.0
Senior year WGPA: 4.5 (as of now)

UCs and CSUs primarily use a GPA calculated without 9th grade:
<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;

However, UC admissions readers will see all grades (but grades from 12th grade for current high school seniors will not be visible since the application is due too early for those to show).

I am in the same boat as you. LOL. I had 5 B’s and 1 A in my Freshman year and straight As in my Junior year with a 4.7 weighted GPA. (Reaching for a 5.0 this semester ^^ ). From what I hear from many counselors and past graduates from my high school is that colleges really like to see improvement. People actually say that I am lucky to have bombed my freshman year and overlapped every student at my school in Junior year because of this. I think you are in a very favorable position, and this can be a possible venue you can take on your Personal Statements ^^

You can kind of see yourself as lucky for doing not so great in freshman year but soooooo much better in junior year, I believe you are in a good position and UCs will definitely see you as a good prospect!!!
