i'm a freshman in community college and i have signed up for a UC Personal Statement workshop

i just realized thats probably meant for people who applying THIS year (i'm applying next year)

should i not go and be considerate of students who couldn't sign up but want to attend the workshop since its more relevant to them..or should i just go, even though its not really meant for me; I figure I signed up, and it will be informative so I might as well go lol

i hope they dont turn me away for being a freshman or something..any advice?

go there.
what exactly do people do in UC personal statement workshop?
Is it just one of those "how to be a successful writer" workshop where they talk about the typical and the OBVIOUS "don't be so emotional, attract your reader, don't bore them" kind of thing? Or do they actually go over your essay and edit it so it looks better?

If it's the first one, then i guess you can go if you dont mind listening to the most obvious lectures you prolly heard at least dozen times in your life already. It won't hurt you.

but if it's the second type (where they go over your essay), then i guess there really isn't any point of going there if you dun have at least some portion of your essays done. but i doubt it's like that.

It's prolly a session of going through what UC prompts are, showing you some good and bad samples of personal statements, and lecture you on the typical Do's and Dont's. It's nothing fascinating.

i personally think it's a waste of time. Rather spend that time on getting some extra studying done.

The workshops held at CCCs are generally intended for those who are applying that year. However, if you want to go this year so that you get a better idea of what to look for you'll just have lots of time to think about it. They won't turn you away or anyhing.

That said, unless you really stuggle with writing I don't really think the personal statement workshop is really necessary. I totally advocate going to as many of the other workshops and campus tours/conferences/whatever, though.

There is only one type of workshop that I attended (How to be successful in transferring to a UC), and after taking that, I regretted it deep down my heart and ever since then I never ever attend another workshop.

All they do is basically going over the same info I read in Catalog and some of UC site's course requirement.

"Make sure you get all your major preps done."
"Maintain a high GPA"
"Join TAP with UCLA"
"You need to complete your IGETC for better chance"
blah blah blah

I don't put too much trust in workshops for my future.

ILC, you should go to the transfer workshop at UCB. They give you ideas on how to put together your essays. The cc workshops never really told me anything I couldn't find on their website.

Dhl- This is true. However, since I find that not everyone seems to find all the stuff out on their own, it's best that they go to at least one workshop and decide from there. I only went to one workshop at my CC, but I went to several conferences at UCLA. Even those were somewhat repetitive, but it did make me feel better than people were asking really, really dumb questions. Reminded me that those of us who take the initiative and seek out resources like CC are WAY ahead of the curve. The conferences are also really good opportunities to talk to UC administrators, adcoms, department heads, etc.

thanks guys and yes i can totally imagine what workshops at CC are like...same as hs with the same bs and the repitition of the same facts and info that can be easily accessed with thei nternet...but i guess i'll contact the counseling office to figure out what exactly will be happening and whether its relevant at all.
