First, is it even possible for out of state people to get in to this school? CB says only 8% were out of state in last year's class.

Second, CB says that UCB requires a performing/visual arts credit. I don't even know if I have a credit in that category. If I don't would I automatically be rejected?

I am out-of-state myself, so yes, it is possible.
When they mean arts credit, it means band, orchestra, chorus, 2D/3D drawing, theater, etc. You can still apply without doing any of those, but you are essentially disqualified. Just do it for 1 year!

I actually didn’t do any performing/visual arts.

There’s a section on the application that asks you to explain any requirements that you haven’t fulfilled. I wrote about how I had participated in the school play, etc, rather than learn it in an academic environment. Seemed to work.

I just called their admin office and they said my chances of admission are much slimmer without fulfilling the requirement. Well **** berkeley then! I’m out of state anyways so I didn’t have any huge motivation to go there. They would probably treat me like an outsider anyways.

^ UC has requirements…and it’s true that your chances are a lot slimmer if you don’t meet the requirements. However, if you do complete the requirement, your chances of getting admitted to Berkeley as an OOS student are probably higher than ever. Berkeley plans to expand its OOS enrollment over the next couple years.

I was under the impression that you were pretty much required to take a year of some form of art just to graduate most high schools, but w/e.

Also, Fox and Grapes much? Getting bitter over this won’t help anything, and it’s not as though you can’t take your year of arts as a Senior (at least, by my understanding).

No the problem is that I can’t fit a visual arts class into my senior year because my high school offers very few options, and my ap classes are inflexible and cannot be moved around so there isn’t a way for me to easily take a visual arts class.

It just seems ridiculous to me that I would be rejected just because I didn’t take drama or art. If it means that I have to take an extra class at a community college just to make the requirement, then I won’t waste my time. As far as I’m concerned, berkeley is a great option for all cali students but very few oos students.

Then the solution, as UpMagic suggested, is to drop one of these APs.

Or, alternatively, see if you can enroll in an independent study program for HS credit.

Requirements are requirements. You may not have noticed, but life isn’t fair and a lot of things in this world don’t make sense. Learn to deal with it and adapt to optimize your situation, and stop complaining.

And, again, “Fox and Grapes much?” OOS students who can afford the premium rate for a private college certainly have a strong motivation to come to Cal if they get in. If they can’t afford that rate or expect enough financial aid to cover the difference, they probably aren’t applying anyway. It seems very much as though you’re letting the fact that you didn’t research or weren’t told about one of the requirements color your perception of the University as a whole.

Also, and possibly relevant, I was led to believe that one had to take a fairly complete science curriculum to be admitted to any of the UCs, but I know quite a few people who didn’t take one or other of them and still got in. I would strongly recommend nixing another class in favor of just taking a year of arts if you’re enthusiastic about getting into any of the UCs, but in the event that you decide it isn’t worth the schedule change, you should still apply.

Well don’t flame me for this but one of the reasons I wanted to go to berkeley was that it would be a very decent back up for me if I don’t get in to stanford (since I really want to live in california and it is close to home). But I must consider other places as well, and I can’t waste my time writing supplement essays and filling out apps for universities that will reject me just for missing 1 credit.

Thus, ucb is off my list, thanks for the suggestions everyone!
