UCD vs. UCSB

Hey I'm new to this site and I just have this question. I'm trying to decide between UC Davis, and UC Santa Barbara. I live in the bay area so Davis is definitely closer, by I don't want to be too close to home. I have been researching both colleges, and they are about equal on everything. But I don't like that Davis is in the middle of nowhere, but it has a fantastic academics (better than UCSB, I hear). I love the Santa Barbara area and social scene, but I want the recognition that davis has for its programs. I'm seeking to major in the sciences and go on to med school. Any comments on either school, in terms of social life, sports, courses, etc? PLEASE HELP!

I think med schools and most employers consider these school dead equals.

im in the same dilemna as you are. i too live in the bay area. from what you posted it seems that you are most worried about having the school recognition when you apply for a job... i dont think you should base your decision off of that. both schools are academically equal. according to u.s. news both are tied for 44th along with irvine. since you are planning to major in the sciences and go to med school, i heard that santa barbara has alot more research opportunities for bio majors than davis.
for me, davis is a well-rounded school... great academics, D1 sports, nice recreation center, close to home, nice weather, college town, and relaxed atmosphere.
santa barbara is pretty much the same thing except for the location. and the social scene is another plus. =]

I live 20 minutes from Davis, and since my grandpa works there I'm there all the time. Davis is definitely not in the middle of nowhere. It's pretty close to Sacramento, and Davis itself is a cute little college town. That town would be nothing without UC Davis.

UC Davis is very well known for their academics, and it's a gorgeous campus! Have you been to visit?

GO AGGS!

VISIT! If you can, that might help you make your decision. They are both great choices it really is about fit (if money is not a factor). Davis might be cheaper in terms of housing, Santa Barbara is BEAUTIFUL, but EXPENSIVE too.

This is a tough one. I think it depends how serious you are about medical school. If you are really good at chemistry/biology and extremely determined to go to medical school, I'd opt for Davis. Otherwise, lifestyle factors would lead me to choose UCSB.
