UCF Application questions/chances

Alongwait- I have never heard of Spirit Airlines, but I’ll be sure to check it out. However, I am from North Jersey and my family prefers to travel directly from Newark to Orlando. I’m guessing that’ll be expensive though. We’ll see when the time comes, but thanks. I will surely check out the information you have posted!

Actually flying into and out of Newark is not as expensive as you might think. I travel for a living and see round trip flights sitting on the average about 200. You may want to consider the Sanford International Airport. Its just north of the campus and may have a direct flight that fits your needs. Small airport, great service, no lines…

love2laugh… You will get accepted… Excellent grades and SAT. Get your application submitted asap. My S applied and did nothing on the personal side. He just submitted his application, SAT, ACT, and transcript. His grades and scores were lower than yours and he was accepted. We did list his outside activities and his high school transcipt shows alot of AP courses.

To date I have no idea why they accepted him and rejected other folks with higher scores and GPA.

love2laugh…also look at Jeblue out of White Plains nonstop to Orlando. I have family in North Jersey and they love flying out of White Plains…they are flying down to Orlando in October for $159 RT.

jswdlw- Thanks so much for the input. I will definitely check out roundtrip tickets from Newark to Sanford International. I have a feeling I’ll need to book tickets extremely early so that I don’t have to pay loads of money during the holiday season haha

And thank you so much for the support. I have literally been paranoid since I sent in the online application yesterday. I even made my sister check if I spelled my name right! Sad, I know lol. Well I am sure your S had qualities the school was looking for. Having high scores isn’t everything. Even I don’t think I have good scores (but thank you!) My parents wanted me to get into the 2000s, but I’m not a good test taker (especially with SAT math!). Atleast I improved my CR and Math. While it may not be in the 2000s range combined, I think a 130 point increase is pretty good, don’t you think?=]

Is your son in state? And about sending in my application asap, thank you. I have followed everyone who has said that=]. I sent in my online application yesterday with my personal statements and I sent in my SAT scores. I just need to call my school sometime tomorrow or next week to send in my transcripts and Counselor recommendation form (I hope they are there now instead of on vacation!)

peacemkr59-Really? Only 159 dollars for a roundtrip in October?! That’s amazing! Yeah, I guess I never found tickets like that because all my family ever does is fly out from Newark or JFK in NY. Hmm…I shall check that out too! Thank you for your advice!!

Thank you everyone for this advice. This has been my first thread on the site and I have already gotten so much help! I really appreciate it!!

Flights from NJ to Orlando are a dime a dozen. Just about EVERY airline flies direct and beause of this, flights are inexpensive. That was a huge selling point when D was deciding on a college. She was also accepted to schools in Indiana and North Carolina, Indianapolis had very limited flights starting at $300 round trip. North Carolina was not direct and also expensive. Just recently, D traveled home during the Summer B and Fall break and the round-trip airfare on Spirit Airlines was $130 using a coupon (signed up for their emails). I already booked her flight home for Thanksgiving and am paying a little over $200 round trip, which is a great price considering that is the busiest travel time of the year and prices soar. We are traveling down to Orlando in October for Family Weekend and I was able to get round-trip tickets for a little over $100 with Spirit. Last month some friends from Jersey came down to spend a few days with her and I was able to get them r/t flights for $125.

Plan ahead for travel arrangements. Remember, too, that there are lots of flights out of Philadelphia and JetBlue and Airtran out of Newark. Spirit also flies out of Laguardia but Newark is your best bet.

I don’t know how D was accepted with her stats, but FSU was also interested in her and put her on the wait list but once she was accepted at UCF she did not pursue any other schools. (On a side note, flights to Tallahassee (FSU) were very limited out of Newark). I believe it was her recommendations and extra curricular activities (with emphasis towards her major) that got her accepted. Also the fact that she applied early helped, as others with slightly higher stats that applied in November or later were denied.

D has already told me that she will not be coming home for Spring break. She said that alot of the girls (and friends from HS) will be spending spring break somewhere in Florida. For Christmas, she met a girl from VA and will be driving home with her (the girl brought her car down), spending a few days with her at her home, then taking Amtrak up to Newark where I will pick her up. Since she has about a month break, she’ll do the same upon return.

JerseyShoreMom- thank you so much. I checked Spirit airlines and their airfare is quite cheap. However, my mom is still unconvinced with me going to UCF. Plus, she feels more comfortable with me going on bigger airlines like JetBlue or Airtrain. Hmm…hopefully I can change her mind and hopefully everything will fall into place. As for tickets, I will always keep that in mind and if and when I go to UCF, I will make sure to book tickets very far in advance!

Thank you!

Just a note, I called last month and the Counselor Recc form is not required for fall 2010.
I don’t have a name, but I spoke to admissions / or emailed / received an answer, I forget which.

love2laugh - yes my S is in state. In fact we live about 1 1/2 hours from the university. He started his first semester this summer and lived on campus. He did not like living in the dorms, due to roommates life style. Next weekend is again the official move out day at the house and into the off campus housing. We got him an apartment for the next year.

Loony2nz- is it really not required?! Well then…that makes it easier. I mean, I am still going to send in recommendations, but the only part of my application I need to make sure to submit is my transcripts! Thanks for the info!

jswdlw- Oh that’s great that you live close enough to each other! Dorming not for him? Hmm…I hope I like it. I heard UCF dorms are fantastic, especially the ones at Academic Village. Gosh, I am so worried I won’t adjust to the Orlando lifestyle coming from NJ, but I want a change. Hopefully it’ll go smoothly=]
