uchicago and dartmouth...

I need suggestions of additional schools to look into, please...

I have already applied to UMich (in-state, as a good match/safety) and UChicago. Although i am pretty sure i will go to Chicago if i get in, i have been trying to figure out a few other schools to apply to. As of now i am considering Dartmouth and Northwestern. Yes, i am aware that these schools are all quite different, but their similarity is that they all seem to intrigue/interest me in some way.

So basically, i want a small-ish school (more than 3000, less than 9000 undergrads) that's good in quite a few areas, that has an attractive campus in an interesting place, that encourages study abroad and extracurricular involvement, that has most students living on campus, and that places lots of emphasis on undergrad education...also, preferably in the midwest or eastern US and with other similarities to Chicago or Dartmouth.

I need all the ideas i can get, so please name a few schools and tell me a bit about them?? Thanks a lot.

Look at LACs--Amherst, Swarthmore, Williams.

hmm...i have a little bit, but my main problem with them is size, since most of them have fewer than 2500 undergrads

I second Northwestern...and maybe you should check out BC, and maybe Vassar (although that might be too small for your tastes...).

Swarthmore is a lot like UChicago. I'd recommend Dartmouth just to try it out - almost everyone I've met who knows something about Dartmouth loves it.

not small - but i'm hearing that there are a good many students from Chicago that attend Univ. of Kansas..........and check into their study abroad programs. very popular w/students.

Well, I know something about Dartmouth, and I don't love it...I mean, Hanover has to be the most frustrating towns I've been to in awhile. All it is is a few overpriced clothing stores, a crappy cafe, and a gas station.

Dartmouth students don't go to Dartmouth for Hanover - and we acknowledge that it isn't a good town. We go there because of all the awesome stuff happening on campus. With countless parties, cultural events, outdoor activities, art events, etc it is a uniquely amazing experience. Forget Hanover.

Anyway, check out Stanford/ Brown/ Duke (more like Dartmouth) and Columbia (more like chicago).

I live in Hanover, and have for my entire life... so i know the town inside and out, and that is why i'm not applying to dartmouth... if you want to go to college in the middle of nowhere, where the college will be your life, by all means, dartmouth is terrific... it's a great town though, if it's what you are looking for. it's very small and liberal, and very beatiful too.

I also don't want a religiously-affiliated school, so BC and Duke are not good, but the others sound interesting. How about a more safety-ish school...anybody know anything about Case Western or others like that?

Honestly my friends at Duke say they haven't seen the impact of religion for a second. In fact, last I heard, Duke dropped its undergraduate methodist affiliation. It is nothing like Notre Dame and the like. Don't factor that in your decision to apply.

Case is NOTHING like Dartmouth and Chicago. Its in a grimy area and the students hate the social life. Its very science oriented and the lectures are large. I personally wouldn't consider it for a second. Emory is an easier admit that you might like (much harder than Case but easier than the others)

I know someone in darthmouth who doesn't like it. There'll be likers and haters at every university that's why you have to be pretty careful with your research...or be adaptable.

How about Columbia, Rice, and Carnegie Mellon.Coumbia is the most like U Chicago of the Ivies, and has the NYC location. Rice has the great academics, the college system (similar to Yale's), and an OK location. (Good financial aid, also). CMU has top programs in a few fields, and a good balance between science and non-science emphasis.

I would check out Brown.

i had to stop by and say hi! these are the two main schools my son visited this summer! he loved 'em both, but applied ED to dartmouth and is headed east! and we just live about 2 hours south of chicago! guess he wanted to get away!
