So I applied early action to UChicago, and was then deferred, but about a week ago, my counselor received a UChicago blanket from them. There was also a letter saying thanks for helping me out and blahblahblah. I know it probably means nothing, especially since UChicago is notorious for sending stuff to everyone, but it iiiis kind of strange.

Did any other deferred students have their counselors get a blanket? I know some people who applied EA and haven't gotten it, but I also know some who have..

It's just kind of strange they'd send her that.

It seems to me like it’d be a reward for encouraging students to apply rather than anything a particular student has done Did your school have quite a few applicants this year or a significant increase over the past year?

My counselor received one too. 6 people applied from my school this year, 2 EA (one accepted, one deferred) 4 RD - including me. (class size: 129)

My GC got one. I’m the only person who applied, RD.

The point of sending a blanket to counselors is:
- To get them to continue sending applications UChicago’s way
- To sway them into ranking UChicago a little higher on the counselor PA component of the US News rankings

Many counselors, especially those who have been around for a decade or two, still have the outdated image of UChicago as an Ivy backup. Contrary to popular opinion, college counselors are hardly education experts, and many have an outdated understanding of the college landscape. Sending them a blanket is a way of bringing the new UChicago into their attention.

I’m pretty sure I was the only one who applied EA or even at all.

But yeah, that’s probably why. Kind of dirty, if you ask me, but oh well.
