UChicago Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

Anyone doing Prompt 3?

@sn12345 With a prompt like this, the question is why anyone wouldn’t want to write that essay.

Is 990 words too long for the extended essay? I can’t find a way to shorten it. Would appreciate any opinions.

Anything below a page double-spaced is usually too short to fully explore a point. Anything longer than 2 pages single-spaced is liable to strain the average application reader’s patience. I’d aim for 1-1.5 pages single-spaced, but I doubt any reader is going to say 990 words is too long. It’s when students reach the 2000-3000 word mark that there’s a real risk of the reader skimming the rest of the essay or falling asleep, bearing in mind the fact that they’ll go through a few hundred of these essays in the space of a couple of weeks.

Is 725 words on the “favorites” essay too long?

Wrote on the “Einstien…propose your own theory…” prompt from past prompts. It was aroung 550 words I guess. Is that good enough? Anyways submitted my EA application today. International Student here.

I just submitted my application today. I’m feeling a bit emotional over it, and I’m worried that I’ll have forgotten to submit something. But, I’ve double checked and everything seems fine.

Hooray!! Good luck to you! My D is still agonizing on her CA essay and just scrapped her UChicago essay for the second time. Not sure she can make the deadline for EA but if not, she’ll go RD.

For my favorites essay, I wrote a paragraph on The Great Gatsby. UChicago has probably read thousands of essays involving that book and I’m worried it’s a cliche :-S

I’m so scared about my Chicago application… I’m worried I don’t stand out enough in my essays!

I’m beginning to wonder if you guys are overthinking your UChicago essays. The school does stress the importance of them but I guess I thought of them as a way to have some fun and learn about yourself in the process.

My D is I think doing the same thing- over analyzing them. She is on her third attempt ( different prompts each time).

Remember to bloom where you are planted. It will be alright . Maybe not perfect but alright.

Hey guys. Once we send in our CommonApps, we’re done? Like hands off from there? Is there anything we do with the website?

Also, have any of you guys sent in an e-mail to express interest or something? Or requested an interview?

I filled out the form to request an interview over a week ago, but I have not been contacted. Is this normal, or should I be worried?

From a fellow worrywart, it’s normal. Requested mine in September and just heard back today. Your interviewer will probably be in touch soon enough.

It has been almost exactly a month since my son submitted a request for an interview and we have still heard nothing.

@NotVerySmart Thanks for letting me know, that makes me feel a lot better. These last few weeks have been tough, and stress levels have somehow increased from junior year. .

I just finished a 818 essay for my supplement. It’s for the Where’s Waldo prompt. Is it too long? It’s basically a story involving a spy mission and interdimensional travel.

My extended essay is nearly 1100 word long (about one and a half pages). Is this too long? I feel that each sentence is important and I can’t shorten it without losing significant content.

@gearsstudio mine is about the same and I’m not too worried about it. I’ve read essays from friends who were accepted and they were all of similar length. I think the reader will assume that since the prompt isn’t traditional it might take more words to get a good answer.

Well, I’m the closest I’ve ever been to what might best be described as a “nervous wreck.” I’m happy with my extended essay. The others, not entirely. I’ve got a question for the more knowledgeable people here on CC.

I had my interview today (not sure if it went well), and I haven’t yet sent in my Common App or supplement. Sent SAT scores a few weeks ago. So the interview report and SAT scores may be percolating through their system before the bulk of my application arrives.

Does anyone know how UChicago goes about matching all materials in such cases? Should I write the regional admissions person just to make sure everything ends up in the right place, or is this not a concern?
