The admissions results are really gonna affect how I remember Star Wars episode 7 in the future I think lol. I’m going a few hours after they come out
My Why UChicago essay is 700 words…,is that problematic? I know they recommend to keep it to about 500.
@trfox7 I know people who’ve gotten in with 1000-word essays… I don’t think the word count is the most important thing they look at in an essay
@kathkath42 That’s good to hear! I like that UChicago isn’t as stringent as other schools when it comes to WC.
UChicago isn’t as stringent as other schools when it comes to anything. They’re seriously so chill. One of my friends turned in his application a day late, and they were totally cool with it.
When someone reads the essay, there’s no word count there lol.
Every year it says “Record breaking number of ED applicants” but in reality its like 20 more applicants.
Guys, I like U of C and want to go there very much. But their RD acceptance rate is realistically 2-4 percent. Let us use some approximations:
10K apply EA and 1k get in. 10% acceptance rate for EA, which is reasonable and most probably accurate, maybe +/-1% of deviation
Another 20k apply RD, probably about 7k are deferred, bringing the total RD applicants to 27k. Another 1k get in. Thats 3.7%. Accounting for deviation, 2-5%, and 5% is really pushing it.
Overall, 6.67%. Accounting for deviation, 6-8%.
I don’t want to be a debby downer or pessimist, but for the elitist institutions (HYPSM, U of C, Columbia), these are the numbers.
But I’m sure many of us will get in (hopefully all). I hope to be apart of UChicago 2020 with all of you!
and idk why so many are treating U of C as a back-up to the Ivies. many can make the argument that U of C is at the level of HYP. Realistically, however, U of C is on par, if not better, than Columbia, and better than all the other Ivies.
Here is the countdown timer:

Do you guys think I have a chance at Chicago EA if I got deferred from Penn ED?
UChicago is supposed to be much tougher than Penn. Penn had 23.2% acceptance but UChicago is <9%.
But, who knows? It’s all in the selection process. Good luck!
@VaishS – While UChicago is probably a bit more selective, when the acceptance rate is under 15%, admission can be really random. You might be able to get into Harvard but rejected from Duke, or vice versa. So, just because you didn’t get into Penn ED doesn’t mean you won’t get into UChicago EA.
Current first year at uchicago here - trust me, what @dr0wning said is true. A large portion of it is your essay, because the people that get in here all have stats that are pretty good (by average SAT score, uchicago has the second smartest student body in the USA), and a HUGE portion of it is who you are as a person. Trust me, if you have the stats, but you don’t have the right type of personality, you WILL NOT THRIVE here, and that’s why some very qualified people don’t get in. You really have to be a little quirky, a huge nerd about something (could be music, could be computers, could be something people don’t care about, like submarines), enjoy getting into arguments and discussions over intellectual things with random people, and love learning, to the point where you prioritize learning over grades (because you’ll learn a lot, but doing well is not always a guarantee). So even if you’re a genius, if you don’t get in, you probably would not have done well here/liked here, even though it’s a top school and academically would have challenged you. It has a very unique personality, and that’s just how it is. But if you’re meant to be here, you will end up here, and love it! For any of you that end up deferred, MAKE SURE YOU CONTACT YOUR ADMISSIONS REP. A huge part of getting in RD or getting off the waitlist is continuing to show interest and updating your admissions rep with certain achievements (trust me, I know - I got off the waitlist after pestering my admissions rep to death haha). Good luck to you all, and I’m sure you’ll do well!
I have two UChicago stickers–one on my laptop and another on my school binder. I’ll have the adhesive remover ready for Friday
@mollikinz there are a few people at school who have UC shirts. wonder what they’ll do if they get rejected or waitlisted
@dr0wning Ouch, that must hurt. At least my stickers are free and temporary.
I have a shirt that I got in the mail lol
I think I’ve gone through every possible emotional stage in the past week and I honestly just want to rip off the bandaid. :D/
@kathkath42 I was so worried about my essay…my extended is 1000+ words haha
@tutututututuru same! I’m so excited for Star Wars though. I hope they don’t mess it up I was a big fan of the first few episodes
