**Decision: Accepted EA

Objective:

[] SAT I/II (breakdown): I was advised by my peers to not take the SAT due to it being reworked
[
] ACT (breakdown): 31 Composite, 33/34 Superscored with a 36 in Science and a Writing score of 10
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9 UW, 4.6 W
[
] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):my school does not rank
[] AP (place score in parentheses): 2 5s, 3 4s

[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Outstanding Chemistry Student Award, National Honor Society (if that counts)[/li]
Subjective:

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Student gov. for 2 years, Academic team for 3 years (JV captain), Model UN for 2 years (Committee Chair), Track and Field for 3 years (Varsity). I’m not sure if this counts, but I also mentioned Drawing as an extracurricular due to it being a strong passion of mine (mentioning drawing as a stress reliever for myself and how I always aim to draw something each and every day).
[
] Job/Work Experience: Yes; cashier/barista and mowing lawns
[] Volunteer/Community service: Yes; Food pantry and Moderating a forum for a game company
[
] Summer Activities: None
[] Essays: I honestly don’t know how to view my essays. For the common app one, I felt like it was well written, although the majority of the essay was very melancholic and depressing. I think I really got the specifics down for the why Uchicago essay, and I chose to write the one-letter-off-major prompt with Neuroscience. I think the idea was there for the latter essay, although I would say that it was my least favorite essay.
[
] Teacher Recommendation: I waved my rights on the application, so I never got to see my recommendation letters. However, I feel that my recommenders were strong, as both of my teachers and my counselor really got to see me grow as an individual throughout high school
[] Counselor Rec: See above
[
] Interview: While I did request one, I did not receive an interview
[li] Supplementary Material: None[/li]
Other

[]Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[
] State (if domestic applicant): Ohio
[] School Type: Public

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, first generation college student[/li]
Reflection

[] Strengths: Strong GPA and leadership, decent ACT score. Based off of a letter I received from my regional counselor, I think that mentioning Drawing as an activity really helped me stand out as a student.
[
] Weaknesses: Besides Drawing, I don’t think I had a lot in my application that would help me stand out. I feel like my essays could have definitely used some tweaking.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My strengths, PLUS my twin and I both applied to UChicago. I don’t know how much being twins made us stand out, but we both ended up being accepted through Early Action
[
] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted OSU, waitlisted University of Michigan.
Subjective:

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Founded and currently sit on the executive boards of two non-profits aiding immigrants with legal and educational resources (Very time consuming). Teen Defense attorney with a Teen Court Program involved with representing teens convicted by the State of Florida. Mock trial (president) Independent research on criminalized teens in Florida’s Juvenile courts, Appointed by County officials to craft legislation for the Miami Dade County Youth Commission as one of the county’s 14 youth commissioners. I also participate in other activities, but these are the only ones worth mentioning.
[
] Job/Work Experience: Legal Internship clerking with Circuit Judge (2 years)
[] Volunteer/Community service: Yes; Food pantry and Moderating a forum for a game company
[
] Summer Activities: Travel, Legal Internship, Teen Court, Management of Non-profit
[] Essays: I took a huge risk on my personal statement and talked about my relationship with my littles sister- it was pretty funny and heartwarming. For “Why UChicago”, my essay was roughly 750 words as there was no word limit. I talked in depth about the Sociology Department and Research opportunities with specific professors who specialized in the Sociology of Law. I professed my love for crocs (yes- the shoe) in my uncommon essay and thought it was pretty funny. It was structured in the form of a legal argument, combining my affinities for crocs and law.
[
] Teacher Recommendation: My Sociology Professor at the local college, a PhD candidate and graduate of Berkeley’s highly ranked sociology program who assisted me in my qualitative research, allowed me to recommend what I wanted written (aka he allowed me to write a self-letter for reference) so I’m almost positive it was 10/10. My English teacher wrote the second letter; she gave me the AP English Language award at my school and since I am an officer for NEHS, I’m pretty sure it was good. 8/10. I waived my rights to view both of the final letters.
[] Counselor Rec: 9/10, also a self letter; however I never read the final letter as I waived my rights.
[
] Interview: Went extremely well, lasted about 2 hours.
[li] Supplementary Material: Ethnography Abstract about socioeconomic trends in Florida’s Juvenile Justice system[/li]
Other

[]Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[
] State (if domestic applicant): Florida
[] School Type: Magnet school with dual enrollment program, I will obtain my Associates Degree upon graduating high school, hence the lack of AP’s
[
] Ethnicity: Hispanic and Caucasian; but indicated Hispanic on applications
[] Gender: Male
[
] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): $160,000- $200,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): my major (Sociology) and a distant relative attended the school nearly 70 years ago lol, so I don’t think it was much of a hook by I mentioned it anyway. [/li]
Reflection

[] Strengths: Perfect GPA, involvement in activities that are impactful and demonstrate intellectual maturity, extremely strong rec letters, good essays. MY MAJOR!!
[
] Weaknesses: No major awards, substandard test scores (Don’t wait until the last minute for testing like I did) and I guess the lack of AP’s -but i took everything my school offered so I don’t know how much that counted against me.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Again, my major. Sociology is typically uncommon for applicants. My essays were pretty unconventional and I literally got free counseling from an ex-Ivy-league admissions offer (my aunt), which helped a lot in terms of crafting a narrative and underscoring my spikes.
[
] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Yale SCEA Deferred/ UF Accepted. Withdrawing from Brown, Bowdoin, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Hopkins, Notre Dame, Northwestern, UPenn, Princeton, Williams, Yale
