Essays (rating 1-10, details):
-----Common App: 8/10 - very accurate reflection of who I am, good story, very well written
-----UChicago Extended Essay: 6/10 - probably not as bad as I think, but still my least favorite essay. I had trouble with the prompt.
-----Why UChicago?: 10/10 - my favorite essay I’ve written; 432 words, very well written, very specific about my major (Classics) and about other departments, mentioned two professors I really look up to, talked about outside of the classroom stuff (diversity, cultural awareness, etc)
-----Optional Essay: 7/10 - solid essay, pretty straightforward, nothing crazy. Talked about The Hobbit, The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury, and Kurt Vonnegut (specifically A Man Without a Country)
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
-----Counselor Rec: 10/10 - she’s like a second mother (/cool aunt), my best friend’s mom, have traveled with her for a total of 4 months on school trips (several weeks every summer + a month long trip to Italy), my Latin teacher for 3 years, certamen (Latin quiz bowl) coach for 5 years, known her for 6/7 years, see her every day, we’re super super close. There’s no one on the planet I’d rather have write a recommendation for me
-----Teacher Rec 1: 9/10 - my Junior US History teacher, she absolutely loves me, we have similar beliefs/interests, we did a one-on-one Independent Study last trimester about Mex Am History and it was amazing
-----Teacher Rec 2: 7/10 - my Junior Chem and Senior AP Chem teacher, she also loves me and I did really well in her class. I don’t know her super well though, we don’t talk much outside of class, but she’s so so nice
-----Interview: 7/10 - off campus with an alumna; I presented myself well, but it was hard to get a read on what she thought of me. We also had super different interests (she was public policy and I’m Latin/Greek), but overall she was nice and we had a good conversation

Reflection
Strengths: extracurriculars, grades/GPA, awards, recommendations, essays
Weaknesses: SAT score, amount of APs (compared to some people), virtually no community service
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I have a lot that makes me a unique applicant, certainly as far as the statewide leadership positions I’ve held (organizing conventions for an organization of 40,000+ Texas Latin students), and I think I was really able to convey my passion for diversity and Classics in my application
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Nowhere yet, but my other top choice colleges are Wellesley and Columbia.
General Comments : As much as you can, do your research about the school and talk SPECIFICS in your essays. As much as possible, express what makes you unique and talk about what you love. If you can, try to get on campus to get a feel for the school - an added bonus is that you can talk about your visit in your essay(s).
