[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): first generation, URM, a lot of work experience & having to balance having basically a full-time job with school [/ul][/li]
Reflection

[ul][] Strengths: My interviews and my essays (which is not saying much lol now that I look in retrospect)
[
] Weaknesses: Extracurriculars & scores – I did pretty on my ACT, but my SAT fell flat, which may have played a part in the final decision lol + due to my work schedule, I didn’t have as much time to get involved as I wish I could’ve had a chance to
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I just didn’t really stand out in the applicant pool. I was deferred from EA, so committed to ED2, but it may have been that compared to other applicants, I wasn’t anything particularly special, especially when I look at other applicant profiles on CC
[
] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted UT Austin, University of Arizona / waiting for decisions from Rice, WUSTL, Yale, Macalester, Washington & Lee [/ul]

**General Comments: ** Congratulations to everyone who got in! I wish you all great luck in your educational pursuits. This was my dream school, but I’ve come to terms with rejection (honestly, I was pretty prepared for it when I got deferred, but I wanted to try again), though I admit I was really disappointed. To everyone else is awaiting other decisions like I am, I hope the odds are ever in your favor!

**Decision: Rejected **

Objective:

[ul][]SAT I (breakdown): Did not submit
[
]ACT (breakdown): 35 (36E, 36M, 36R, 33S, and a 12 on Writing)
[]SAT II: 800 M2, 800 Lit, 780 Bio-M
[
]Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.93 (4.53 Weighted)
[]Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): My school doesn’t offer rank, but I was salutatorian, so I know I was 2nd.
[
]AP (place score in parentheses): Latin (5), APUSH (3), Calc BC (5), Stats (5), Physics I (5), Chem (5), Bio (5), Lang (5), Lit (5), CSP (5), World (5)
[]Senior Year Course Load: AP Lit, AP CSP, Calc 3 (at a college), Linear Algebra (at a college), AP Stats, Literary Magazine
[
]Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Scholar Finalist[/ul]

Subjective:

[ul][]Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): I mostly played tennis—about 40 hours a week—and not going to lie, I was pretty good at it too. That is to say, I was one of the best in the country for my age, but I got injured and while I’m still playing it, I’m by no means as good as I used to be. I also have been playing piano for about 13 years now.
[
]Job/Work Experience: I’m in the midst of a gap year and participated in various internships.
[]Volunteer/Community service: I used to volunteer about 15 hours a week at a Rape Recovery Center. I also used to work as a Teacher’s Assistant.
[
]Summer Activities: Mostly tennis given that it’s like a full time job.
[]Essays: I’d like to think my essays were quite good. My CA essay discussed family hardships I’ve been through and how I discovered my identity through reading. My “creative” essay, I created my own prompt and wrote about post-structuralism in daily life. My Why Chicago essay discussed the uniqueness of the school and the desire to learn; I quoted some of my favorite professors and discussed classes I wanted to take.
[
]Teacher Recommendation: I didn’t read mine, but I’d like to think they were good?
[]Counselor Rec: Same as above.
[
]Additional Rec: n/a
[]Interview: I requested one, but did not have one.
[
]Supplementary Material: I submitted me performing a piano piece. I also had the tennis coach’s support.[/ul]

Other

[ul][]Applied for Financial Aid?: Yup
[
]State (if domestic applicant): I moved around a lot, but generally on the West Coast and Intermountain West
[]Country (if international applicant): US
[
]School Type: Private
[]Ethnicity: Multiracial
[
]Gender: Male
[]Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): My dad is wealthy (250k+), my mom is middle class (around 60k I believe)
[
]Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I was a recruited athlete.[/ul]

Reflection

[ul][]Strengths: Not going to lie, I tend to think I had most things going for me. I was a top athlete, top student; I know I’m a great writer.
[
]Weaknesses: I tend to think I’m a very strong athlete.
[]Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: To be honest, I don’t really know. While I’m certainly disappointed about my rejection, I respect the admissions office decision, and whatever happens happens, and there’s nothing I can do now.
[
]Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: So I’m in the midst of a gap year, so I’ll do both last year and this year. Last year I was accepted to Yale (RD), Cornell (RD), USC, Cambridge, NYU (RD), Georgetown (Deferred EA, Accepted RD), UMich (EA). I was rejected from Princeton (RD) and UVA (EA).

This year, thus far, I was accepted to MIT (EA), and McGill. I was deferred from UChicago (EA, and now rejected), and Columbia (ED). I also applied to Georgetown, Princeton, Yale (received a likely letter last week), Brown, Swarthmore, Carleton, Davidson, and probably some others that I’m forgetting about.[/ul]

**General Comments: ** Congratulations if you got in! If you didn’t, don’t worry about it too much. Getting rejected sucks, I know, especially from your top school (I really wanted to go to Princeton last year and got rejected, and obviously, I did apply ED2 to Chicago and I just got rejected).

**Decision: Accepted

Objective:

[ul][] SAT I (breakdown): 1590 - EBRW 790, Math 800, Essay 8-7-8
[
] ACT (breakdown): Did not take
[] SAT II: Math Level 2 800, Literature 760, East Asian language w/ Listening 800
[
] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): around 3.9
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank
[
] AP (place score in parentheses):
[] IB (place score in parentheses): Did pretty well in the UK national curriculum; my best guess of an equivalent IB score would be roughly 43 or 44. I did maths, chemistry, economics, drama/theatre and history, and got/am predicted the highest possible grade (A or A) for each.
[] Senior Year Course Load: A2 Chemistry, A2 Economics, AS History, etc
[
] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None basically. Got some awards for doing well in the British national exams taken after 10th grade (GCSEs) but, otherwise, nothing major[/ul]

Subjective:

[ul][] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): My main ECA was founding/editing my school’s literary magazine (wrote about it for my Common App). Also did some student government (Vice President in 9th grade and President in 11th), drama/theatre, MUN, track and field, ultimate frisbee, etc.
[
] Job/Work Experience: Did an internship in the summer after 11th grade at an academic journal, basically proofreading and translating abstracts of articles.
[] Volunteer/Community service: None.
[
] Summer Activities: Went to summer school (9th and 10th), then did the aforementioned internship (11th). These were valuable in helping me demonstrate an interest in history as my school didn’t offer lots of history classes. They only began offering A Level History this year - but this also gave me the opportunity to go beyond my high school’s curriculum.
[] Essays: Quite good. I liked my Common App essay, which was about leadership (editing my school’s lit mag), quite a lot. My ‘quirky’ essay was sort of a ‘slice of life’ piece about riding the tube/metro - I enjoyed writing it but looking back later I thought it was a little pretentious… but, hey, I still got in. Btw I chose a past prompt, the one about portals. Finally, for Why UChicago, I pretty much stayed on point with reasons and evidence from their website, etc. Overall I liked my essays.
[
] Teacher Recommendation: 9/10 and 8/10 - my LoRs were from my As Level Drama teacher and A Level Economics teacher. I asked them to write my LoRs simply because I felt they liked me a lot.
[] Counselor Rec: 10/10 - going to a small school and really standing out helped a lot
[
] Additional Rec: 9/10 - a teacher who worked with me on the lit mag, also a personal friend
[] Interview: 6/10 - I flew onto campus last summer and did a real interview with a 4th year student. It went okay but got quite awkward at points.
[
] Supplementary Material: I gave a PDF sample of selections from our lit mag[/ul]

Other

[ul][]Applied for Financial Aid?: No
[
] State (if domestic applicant):
Country (if international applicant): UK
[] School Type: Private
[
] Ethnicity: East Asian
[] Gender: Male
[
] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): Not sure… middle class, probably
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None[/ul][/li]
Reflection

[ul][] Strengths: I had two well-developed (though not world-class) focuses - lit mag and history - and am pretty well-rounded overall in terms of academics. Good scores on SATs and British exams. Okay ECA’s and good essays also.
[
] Weaknesses: No major weaknesses, I think, but a few minor ones maybe: over-represented ethnicity, over-represented country, no major international awards.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really do wonder if I would have got in if I had applied RD with the purported 2% acceptance rate. But UChicago has been my dream school for quite a while, so I didn’t want to take risks with that. So, yeah, applying ED 2 + having a relatively strong application probably helped.
[
] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at McGill University, deferred from the University of Virginia early action (go figure). And now I have to withdraw 10+ applications… oh well.[/ul]

**General Comments: ** Congrats to everyone who made it!!! The process was definitely a drag and so much stress with the SATs and essays, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. All you can do is work your hardest, be genuine about your passions in your essays and pray for the best. Good luck!

**Decision: Rejected **

Objective:

[ul][] SAT I (breakdown): Did not take
[
] ACT (breakdown): 32 (English-35, Reading-32, Science-33, Math-29)
[] SAT II: Did not take
[
] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.86
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):15% of 569
[
] AP (place score in parentheses): European History (3), Chemistry (3), APUSH (4), English Lang (2- honestly don’t know what happened there. I did VERY well on the in class exams).
[] IB (place score in parentheses): Not offered
[
] Senior Year Course Load: Band, Painting II, US Government, AP Bio, Library Media Science, AP Calc, AP Physics I, AP Literature
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):[/ul][/li]Silver Award (scouts), Gold Award Candidate

Subjective:

[ul][] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): (color guard), varsity winter guard, (mobile meals youth council), leadership of Edmond, varsity choir, (key club secretary and project chair)
[
] Job/Work Experience: I have 2 jobs. One as a staff trainer at Chick-fil-a (4 years), and another as a server at a country club (3 months). I work around 30 hours a week because I live on my own.
[] Volunteer/Community service: NHS, Food Bank, mobile meals youth council
[
] Summer Activities: work and girl scouts
[] Essays: Why UCHICAGO (9/10), Common App (7/10), Elements (8/10)
[
] Teacher Recommendation: AP Chem & APUSH (10/10, only one I read).
[] Counselor Rec: unknown, but she’s known me since sophomore year
[
] Additional Rec: color guard coach (6/10)
[] Interview: none
[
] Supplementary Material:[/ul] submitted two paintings

Other

[ul][]Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
[
] State (if domestic applicant): Oklahoma
Country (if international applicant): n/a
[] School Type: Medium Public? Graduating class is almost 600
[
] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[
] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): $0-$30,000; Yes, financial aid. I’m on Free and Reduced Lunch
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):[ /list] I’m blind in my right eye, but do not have any mods on tests. My dad passed away when I was 9, and my abusive mother kicked me out when I was 16. I’ve been on my own since (hence why my tests aren’t the hottest).

Reflection

[list][] Strengths: I have a very unique background, which I felt set me apart. I’ve overcome a large variety of obstacles while still maintaining my grades.
[
] Weaknesses: I’m from Oklahoma, where we are ranked 48th in education. My test scores were also subpar compared to most applicants, probably.
[] Why you think you were rejected: I honestly don’t know. My ACT was in the middle 50%, and I don’t come from a normal family, which would normally lower scores.
[
] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul] accepted to Ohio State, SWOSU, and University of Oklahoma.

**Decision: Accepted

Objective:

[ul][] SAT I (breakdown): 1460 (Math 780; Reading 680; Essay 6-6-6)
[
] ACT (breakdown): NA
[] SAT II: Math II 800; Physics 760
[
] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): NA
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): NA
[
] AP (place score in parentheses): NA
[] IB (place score in parentheses): 40 (Maths HL 7; Physics HL 7; Visual Arts HL 7; English B HL 6; Philosophy SL 5; Vietnamese Self-taught Language SL A 7; EE Maths B and TOK B)
[
] Senior Year Course Load:
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Probably Second Prize in the Vietnamese National Olympiad in Informatics.[/ul] [/li]
Subjective:

[ul][] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): My activities are mostly including arts to some extent, from co-founding and co-organizing an art camp in China, doing lots of work as Chief Designer in school events, to leading the school’s yearbook team, the Choir, and the Acapella group, and publishing some short stories on magazines and books. I’m also writing a novel and trying to get it publish.
[
] Job/Work Experience: Working as a User Experience Researcher for 3 months; Teaching English, and Math + Sciences in English for 3 months also (all in Vietnam as I’m taking a gap year).
[] Volunteer/Community service: Help to build a school in rural Cambodia; sing for community events; math tutoring at school. Nothing special.
[
] Summer Activities: All included above.
[] Essays: I think the essays are decent.
My CA one is about the struggle I got in my first time conducting a big choir, I connect it with my love for game theory and mathematics and solve the problem. It is well connected and fun to read. 8/10 maybe.
My Uncommon one is the “Armor” prompt, I chose to write about my slippers as the armor, and about how it also represents my blind nationalist belief (honeycomb slippers are a thing in Vietnam). I linked it to the Vietnam War, my grandfather stories, and my trip to Cambodia. Again, it’s well connected, quirky, and has a strange view. 9/10.
My Why UChi one is quite basic. I wrote about bamboo, and about the saying “Breathe, and you are alive.” I linked it with the sense of community and supportiveness in UChi. Quite literary and poetic. 8/10, or a bit less.
[
] Teacher Recommendation: I have three.
My Informatics teacher for 2 years in Vietnam, I’m very close to him as I was the only girl in the National Olympiad team, and he’s also my homeroom teacher. 10/10.
My Maths IB teacher. I mean we like each other a lot but he isn’t the best writing person ever, so he said that the LOR for me is something like 10-line long. Maybe 6/10?
My Visual Arts IB teacher. Same reason. 6/10.
[] Counselor Rec: Probably good. We have a system that our advisor actually writes the counselor rec, and I mean he only has 3 students to write that thing for. And we are close. He’s my IB Physics teacher and I’m a good student.
[
] Additional Rec: NA
[] Interview: I did request, but never get one (probably because I’m an international student).
[
] Supplementary Material: 10 pieces of paintings and drawings - they are quite my strength; a 5-page in-class poem that is a creative writing piece for the “Whale Rider” book, quite a good one, use lots of ancient language and literary devices (my score was 98% in class with it). [/ul]

Other

[ul][]Applied for Financial Aid?: Yeah…
[
] State (if domestic applicant):
Country (if international applicant): Vietnam
[] School Type: Private
[
] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[
] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): < 7,000 USD
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Maybe none [/ul] [/li]
Reflection

[ul][] Strengths: My essays are probably the only thing that makes me memorable. They are creative, thoughtful, well-crafted, and strange. Especially the Uncommon one. Also my Informatics teacher’s LOR. And my Visual Arts portfolio may be.
[
] Weaknesses: Definitely scores. I mean I was a good student, but not to the point of studying a lot for good scores, like I only did the practices on Khan Academy for SAT I. My IB score isn’t great either since it’s a difficult combination and Philosophy is hell to me. The point that I’m an international student from Vietnam isn’t helpful, as we all know.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Honestly, I think I’m an intermediate applicant, and the only thing that makes me standing is my ability to reflect and to think interestingly…
[
] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Last year, I got accepted to RISD and UBC (didn’t go since I didn’t get any money), got rejected at Brown, UChi, Moho, Smith, Wellesley, U of Washington at St. Louis.
This year, I got accepted to Luther (EA), Bennington (EA), and now UChi. Rejected by Brown (ED). Waiting for Middlebury, Lewis & Clark, Skidmore, and HongKong Uni.
My school only allows students to apply to 8 schools per year, so my range is quite large because my quirkiness in writing essays is too risky sometimes, and I don’t have any counselor. [/ul]

General Comments: I applied last year and got rejected, also applied EA and got deferred. Compare my three times, essays definitely matter. The experience you have is important too, but moreover is how you think and reflect on it, what do you get out of it. I basically didn’t change a single thing from my EA to ED II application, so being committed is something they are definitely looking for.
Be wise and strategic while choosing schools and writing your thing. I learned it in a difficult way last year.

**Decision: Accepted

[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School does not rank
[

[] IB (place score in parentheses): n/a
[

[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): History Department Prizes, National Latin Exam medals[/li][/ul]

[

[] Essays: Strong, good writer, I thought they were quite academic but guess they were okay
[
] Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t see, but good relationships with both, presumably good
[] Counselor Rec: Don’t know, didn’t see, counselor is very experienced/good
[
] Interview: Had two, we’re not sure why – alumni interview at high school, and skype interview with UofC senior, both went very well
[/ul]

[] School Type: Private
[
] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[
] Income Bracket (mention if FA candidate): About 50% demonstrated need
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none[/li][/ul]

Reflection

[ul][] Strengths: Rigorous class choices, graduating with two diplomas (additional diploma in subject area with additional requirements)
[
] Weaknesses: GPA (sacrificed higher GPA for more challenging classes maybe? Who knows…)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Don’t presume to know, but can guess it’s for the same reasons he thought he was a good fit – he has gravitated toward very analytical/interdisciplinary classes in HS, craves same (loves the Core), wrote about that preference in essays, maybe geographic diversity helped? Seems like New England representation last year was low, also intends to major in Classics/Linguistics which may be a smaller pool than other interests? Again, all speculative…
[
] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Deferred Princeton SCEA (although I should mention these 2 schools were tied for 1st choice with him, he only applied in this sequence because of ED2 option at Chicago). Personally I am relieved – I think Chicago is much better fit for him (but what does a mom know, anyway?) Applied everyplace else RD, so he’ll never know!

Reflection

[ul][] Strengths: Essays, interview, extracurriculars, sibling legacy, ED II probably helped, most challenging course load offered at my school
[
] Weaknesses:Grades, standardized test scores
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Grades are pretty unremarkable if not poor so I didn’t expect to even be waitlisted, I’ll be surprised if I get off but I guess my intangibles are pretty well aligned with the whole UChicago attitude
[
] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul] Rejected from Notre Dame, accepted to Binghamton University, and Rutgers University, waiting to hear from ten other schools

**General Comments: ** Really surprised that I was even considered as a waitlist applicant, shows that UChicago really views applications holistically because grade-wise I am far from their typical applicant, pretty happy with it, know from my sister that it’s a challenging but incredible environment so good luck to everyone who plans to attend! Also good luck to everyone rejected, it sucks but just trust you’ll end up where you’re supposed to be!

**Decision: Accepted

**General Comments: **
Honestly, I feel very honored to be part of UChicago’s Class of 2022. Congratulations to all who got accepted. Those who didn’t, don’t fret. There’s still opportunity and it’s not the school that makes a person’s life but the person’s decisions and choices.
