It won’t hurt to upload the midterm grade as an FYI but if you already sent an LOCI then they’ll know you are interested. Sending along the progress report will help confirm that. Just remember that no one applies to a major at UChicago and if you had been planning English Lit you would very likely also be updating them on your Stanford math grade. Your major is only one part of your academic life at UChicago.
Thank you for your correction of my wrongful word choice; I presented to the committee my strong, ambitious interest in mathematics throughout and after my application.
Meanwhile, I do not fully understand the idea of “sending along the progress report.” Do you mean that uploading the two documents through the portal will help the committee confirm that I have a continued interest in the university? If so, could you please elaborate on the mechanism?
Appreciate your advice!!
I meant your midterm grade as that is evidence of excellent academic progress. While it’s not an official academic mark, it’s still a real-time demonstration that you are doing well in a college course. You already told them you have continued interest because you already sent in an LOCI, correct? You don’t need to send in a second one. Also, please see my post #201 because they don’t want you to be sending in a ton of material. Sometimes just following the directions is the best course of action.
Makes perfect sense. I will definitely upload my midterm report through the portal while refraining from overwhelming them with additional materials. I really appreciate your advice!!
Trying to put together waitlist stats for my son and UofC doesn’t do common data set? How is that possible??? Do they not take a single federal dollar therefore don’t have to comply with CDS? Anyone know how many were offered waitlist, how many accepted waitlist and how many were taken a spot off the waitlist for 2020?
Congrats to those accepted!
Colleges are not obligated to publish a Common Data Set (although most do). UChicago does comply with the federally mandated IPEDS reporting which you can find here: College Navigator - University of Chicago
UChicago doesn’t do a CDS and they don’t report how many go on or are taken from the waitlist, either for the current year or the year following (z-list).
has anyone gotten off the waitlist yet? if/when do ya’ll think they’ll start sending offers?
Last year, if I remember it correctly, they started admitting students off the waitlist almost promptly after Ivy Day (which was the 26th of March). So I think it can be anywhere between mid April and the beginning of the new semester (the worst case scenario) this year.
Please correct or further my information and idea.
Son sent his LOCI yesterday. He’s gotten into some good schools and is waiting to hear from a handful of others. There’s only one school he would take over Chicago at this point…so fingers crossed.
Last year was a bit of an outlier.
It definitely was. What do you suspect may have been the reason? Hence, do you think the committee will return to the traditional trend for this year?
@viva0704, last year’s admission cycle ended about the same time as the pandemic started. All top universities saw large numbers of new admits changing their plans, requesting a gap year, etc. because no one knew what fall was going to look like. This year, we are hopefully at the end of the pandemic, not the beginniing, and UChicago has already announced that they are planning to a return to business as usual in the fall (assuming current trends continue). So you might look to what happens in a non-pandemic year, and then assign some weighting between that scenario and the pandemic. I’d probably assign more weight to a “normal” scenario than a pandemic one.
Thank you for your response; I see the logic behind the events. I too believe it is plausible to assign more weight to the regular scenario; however, one negative outcome I inevitably anticipate is that, given the fact that the university has already accepted a larger number of students, us the waitlisted students will be facing a lower chance of admission than the previous year. Regardless, I really hope that the upcoming future treats us well.
Anyone in off the waitlist yet?
was wondering the same thing
My suspicion is that Uchicago will start pulling people off the waitlist very soon bc ivy day was yesterday and people are gonna get into Princeton and Harvard and stuff and choose that over Uchicago
Agreed!
Yes. Stanford comes out today. So if people are turning down Chicago, it is most likely for Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, or MIT (4 of 5 of which came out/will come out yesterday and today.
Not really. Just ask Bill gates’ son, who turned down all the schools for UChicago. The Ivy’s are on the decline. Almost all of the Ivies, including Princeton, have a low yield.
