UChicago Early Decision / Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission

Congratulations. Can you share your stats?

Deferred EA. 3.99 GPA and 1580 (superscored) SAT. Great CommonApp essay, OK UChicago essays, excellent recommendations, great awards, and good extracurriculars.

Gan is another resource for those who were accepted and have questions. Her DC is a first year and seems to have had a great quarter.

Congratulations and welcome to UChicago. You are a great candidate and no wonder UChicago wants you there. As a math major with a potential second major/minor in philosophy, I cant tell how great UChicago Philosophy department is. Congrats again.

Is getting deferred from EA is soft rejection or still there is hope?

Not necessarily a soft rejection, you still have a chance. If UChicago is your top choice school then changing to ED2 will significantly increase your chance.

That’s what i was thinking but didn’t get chance to visit…that’s why debating.

There are always a few EA’s who get in RD but it seems to be a small number. Even admissions has acknowledged that in the past by talking about the very small chances of those lucky few deferred EA’s who got in via RD. It’s not the most common avenue for admission, but it does happen. My guess is that they had reason to take a second look at the application and realized that gee maybe this person would be a great fit after all and is quite likely to attend even w/o the ED. If you feel you are that candidate, send them what you think will help make your case.

I don’t know what they r thinking. Is LOCI is enough to show?

That’s about all you can do at this point.

If deferred as an EA Chicago gives you a chance to show interest by allowing you to Apply ED2 a commitment if accepted. If you dont take that offer to apply ED2 (unless financial aid is an issue) they pretty much have weeded out those who really want to go vs those who applied but would go elsewhere if a “better” offer is made. Getting accepted from the EA-defer-RD route is likely very rare.

In that case, there is no chance for EA applicants to get in unless they go for ED(1/2).

yep, other other schools ( that have ED1/ED2/EA options) also offer the ED2 option to deferred EA students too. This enables them to get a feel for your commitment and of course possibly increase yield. If you switch to ED2 your showing commitment. If you don’t and wait for RD (delaying for financial reasons is a valid reason) unless something major happened to dramatically change you application ( via LOCI ) odds are markedly against you. This is in contrast with places who only have ED and you get deferred where the number of accepted from the deferral group may actually still be higher than the general RD pool.

That sounds very unfair to those unable to ED anywhere.

True, but that’s how it is. UChicago cares a lot about yield, so they want to push deferred applicants to ED2. This is not to say that deferred applicants never get accepted in RD - but their chances are much lower.

Those kids seem to get squeezed in the current state of admissions. And unfortunately Chicago is not wrong in their assessment so that reality is unlikely to change. we know one student in this situation (and they truly love Chicago) but the others all applied EA because they EDed at an Ivy.

It’s so difficult for someone to do ED without visiting the school.
