UChicago ED II Class of 2021

Here’s an attempt to get back on track: of those accepted ED2 who was first deferred from EA and who was an original applicant? Future readers might want to know how that all shook out, especially given the large number of deferrals from EA.

My daughter was originally deferred and switched a couple days later.

Son was EA and switched to EDII after deferral accompanied with an official visit coordinated by Advisor in early Jan.

Son was also EA deferral switched to ED2…also with college counselor interface

“I agree that the one area Chicago is somewhat weaker is medical/ chemistry areas.”

This admission, combined with the lack of an engineering school, puts Chicago in a worrisome position as a future-facing school.

I’m sure Chicago would happily see its Law School drop a few places in the rankings if it meant a hospital system of NU’s stature, or NIH funding comparable to NU. Further, the school would trade it’s sky high ranking in, say, classics, for a sky-high ranking in Chem or comp sci.

All top schools right now are investing heavily in their medical plants and STEM offerings. Yale’s invested literally billions in the past decade. While NU’s hospital system has been on the rise, Chicago’s has actually fallen considerably.

Premier medical/STEM offerings are vital for any world-class research U. For those comparing Chicago to Harvard, Stanford, Yale, etc. how could one make the argument that Chicago is just as well positioned in these areas?

Chicago is either lower-ranked (or doesn’t have) the offerings presented at these other major research Us. How is it going to make up ground against schools that can bring in more money and already have stronger brands?

The Chicago adulation on these threads needs to be reigned in.

Well, one thing I’d like to explore further is the extent to which UChicago originates PhD’s at the baccalaureate level. That is, students matriculating at the College who eventually go on to earn a PhD. To me that’s a crucial metric: while a school may or may not be tops in everything, it might be tops in the % of kids who go on to enroll in top grad programs. We know this is true for business, law, medicine, etc. from the Outcomes Report. I’m wondering about UChicago’s ranking as an originator of eventual PhD’s - where do they go, what do they study? etc. So I started a separate thread here:

@Cue7 Agreed on Harvard and Stanford. Strongly disagree on Yale. Yale’s investments has not made it a STEM powerhouse. UChicago clearly tops it in Physics, Astronomy and math, for example. Engineering only matters to those who want to study it. Long live the (lucid) adulation … !

Here is a nice bit of data gathering done by Pomona and showing the U.S. undergraduate origins of PhDs awarded by U.S. universities 2003-2012, ranked by PhDs per 100 bachelor’s degrees awarded. No surprise, overall the University of Chicago does quite well (or did over the period studied): Tied for tenth overall. and virtually even with Harvard and Princeton as the top comprehensive research universities. (The overall ratings are dominated by tech schools, and in most fields Swarthmore and Reed are very highly ranked.) Top 10 in Life Sciences, Math/Computer Science, and Social Sciences (no surprise there, either); top 20 in Physical Sciences and Humanities; in most fields close to Harvard and Princeton, and almost always in the top 5 of comprehensive research universities.

Secon round of swag arrived today.
Tshirt, hat, pen, post-it notes, window sticker.

Keep in coming UChicago - many thanks.

^^ I’m trying to stay on this thread for its main purpose. This thread is for undergrad ED2 admissions, not what I am reading above about how Chicago’s rank/law school/medical plants “aren’t as good.” If you have a negative opinion, share it on a different thread or keep it to yourself. I guarantee that nobody opening this thread wants to hear it. Most of us read this thread because we are 100 percent enthusiastic about attending the class of 2021 and want to communicate about ED 2 admissions. Thanks.

You are correct @coolcheesebagel, this thread was pirated upthread. I brought that everyone’s attention at the time. The consensus was that it was a NU person seeking to rain on UChicago’s parade and the thread got off message from there. Let’s return this thread to its original purpose! No more: :ar!

And you all should be extremely psyched and proud this magnificent institution! Respect and good luck.

@fbsdreams @JBStillFlying @vicangie @denydenzig @AshleyMisAwesome Update: I got into Michigan Ross and UC BERKELEY!!! Hard decision coming up. I don’t know if I should take the Ross pre-admit or apply to Haas Sophomore year at Berkeley for better chances at investment banking on Wall Street.

@TheShortSon Congrats!!! Don’t take the Berkeley offer. There was a detailed article on “poets and quants for undergrads” analyzing a student’s chances of making it into the Berkeley program in their second year. It’s pretty bad.

@denydenzig On Berkeley’s website it says that 713 apply and 263 are admitted.

@TheShortSon
This is from their website

@TheShortSon has already passed the first hurdle which is to get into Cal so his chances are closer to 37% than 6-8%. 37% also beats 19% from the jc.

@JBStillFlying However, I have that juicy, sweet pre-admit to Ross. This is gonna be a really hard decision. What do y’all think? I wanna go into IB or management consulting. People are telling me that I will have more opportunities at Berk with SF/LA offices and NYC offices, so idk.

@TheShortSon DAMNN GO TO BERKELEY! CONGRATS OMG!

@JBStillFlying The thing is only 37% of a talented class pool that apply from within Berkeley get in. That’s no cake walk. Why risk it. One bad semester could torpedo a student’s chances. I understand Ross changed to a direct admit recently? so a student who makes it in is guaranteed a spot?
