UChicago - Now a top recipient of Preppies?

I think the whole Princeton eating club thing turns a lot of students off. I do think that is a valid concern that the link mentions.

^ Oh no! Princeton is losing students “even” to UChicago!

I knew one student who applied to both, got rejected from Princeton and accepted at UChicago with merit and ended up at Yale. But she was intent to get into an Ivy or Stanford and I think would have gone to Stanford if accepted there.

I use think that the schools seem to attract different kinds of kids but I think there is more cross admits or cross interest kids applying to both. My friend’s D was interested in applying to both at one point but I think applied to UPenn and Columbia instead. Did not get into any.

My D was totally turned off by the eating clubs (hearing about them but no visit) -not that she would have gotten in. But she happily applied to UChicago and is heading there in the Fall.

when norndorf spoke a couple of years ago to accepted students, he said the largest number of applicants from one school in the united states was stuyvesant with over 200, of which they accepted around 20! chicago was not a premier destination for stuyvesant students twenty years ago.

Location and merit scholarships might be explanations for more people than expected choosing Chicago over Princeton. Chicago admits who have also been admitted to Princeton are probably some of the most competitive Chicago admits so relatively more of them have probably received merit aid from Chicago. Also for students in the midwest, relocating to the east coast might seem intimidating or too big of a change and having a top school like Chicago in the broader region is a great choice. Also Princeton, while second to none for undergrad quality, does not have the incredible allure of Harvard or Stanford so more cross admits might feel ok turning it down for Chicago if they already have some reason to do so.

KingTut27, I’ll bite^ on the videos. You may not be able to link them but tell me how you google for them exactly.

@KingTut27 ^

I have a friend in admissions who says roughly 40% of admitted students now come from feeder schools, with the ones they target in particular being Stuyvesant, Horace Mann, the Lab School, Harvard-Westlake, and New Trier.

40%!?

Oh my.

What counts as a feeder school? We only send a couple of students on average each year, but the college visits our high school each year. Does that qualify?

Interesting. Our school traditionally has averaged 4 to 5 students per annum to Hyde Park, but last year only two were accepted and attended. I hope this is not a permanent trend.

What defines a feeder school to Chicago?

@KingTut27 You mean to say Stanford has gained ground to now be considered at the same level as HYP ( even more desirable than Princeton, Yale these days). Chicago and Columbia are not in any way at the same level.

@Penn95 they’re above Penn at least

^ Ouch…

@Trickster2212 Not quite. Maybe that is what you wanna tell yourself, but the facts do not support that (yield, cross admits, number of Rhodes, marshall scholarships lately, recruiting,/employment and salary statistics, research output, overall grad school strength, overall recognition/perception etc). US NEWS rankings change, for many years penn was higher than both, and for many years before that Columbia was higher. These 3 schools are widely considered the next tier after HYPSM, that has been a fact for some time now. But hey keep telling yourself whatever u wanna hear

I’m glad you’re so secure in Penn’s status as an academic institution that you feel the need to come other schools’ boards and assert how important rankings from 10 years ago are.

You really make Penn look good.

Idk about all of that stuff but I think we already do better in terms of Rhodes and Marshall scholarships. Give it a few years for yield and watch as Booth overtakes Wharton.

On second thought I don’t want to start a flame war. If I’m honest UPenn was my top ivy pick along with Columbia. A lot of the brightest kids in my high school are going to UPenn and they seem to really love it. Now give me a kiss.

An ED program tends to have that effect.
