@UChicago Hi Hannah, does UChicago have a policy regarding legacies and if any additional consideration is given, does it only matter if they apply ED? Thanks for your help.
Please could you tell me whether a student on waitlist will be informed of your college decision that the admissions are closed? I am sure many of us are eagerly waiting to hear either a positive or a negative answer.
Our son is planning to apply this fall EA. UChicago is far and away his number one choice, and even though he is blessed with perfect grades, a 36 ACT, and a pretty strong list of extra-curricular activities, knows the acceptances rate and is concerned he may not get in. So, he is planning to apply EA to one other school. We’ve suggested he consider ED because he knows he wants to attend UChicago, but he is unpersuaded for the reason noted above. What advice can you suggest we offer him in his “why UChicago” essay to convey that yes, UChicaogo really is his number one choice and he will attend if admitted? Thank you.
@UChicago what is your early action policy? How restrictive is it?
Don’t mean to step in for @Uchicago but a couple of things
- ED signals a commitnement to UChicago that you will attend if admitted, EA is for those who need to compare admission offers/FA packages
- You can still apply EA to other schools (as long as it is NOT an SCEA/REA school as that would be a violation of their policiy not UChicago's).
From UChicago’s website.
Our Early Decision I (ED I) application option is best for students who have identified UChicago as their absolute first choice and know they would choose to attend UChicago immediately if offered admission. This admissions plan is binding, meaning that if admitted, you commit to attending UChicago, withdrawing outstanding applications from any other school, and not applying to any additional colleges. If you are enthusiastic about applying to UChicago early but would like to compare admissions offers and financial aid packages from multiple colleges before making a final decision, you should consider applying through the Early Action plan.
Students may only apply Early Decision to one college, but may apply to other schools through non-binding admission plans in addition to an Early Decision application.
Early Decision I applicants will receive an admissions decision of admit, deny, or defer.
Hello, my son is being recruited by UC. He’s very excited as UChicago is his dream school. Curious, I heard UC coaches (unlike most schools) don’t have much influence (or any) with athletes in admissions, is that true? Or do they have a few “slots,” as they say.
@curiouscharlie, I have heard that with Uchicago it depends on how respected the coach is with the admissions department. If the coach has a very good relationship with them, then they can make a difference, but only if the student is strong academically.
Thanks so much. My son was just accepted by admissions. We are thrilled!
@curiouscharlie , Congratulations!!! My son is in the process of writing his essays and will be submitting his app in a week or so, with coaches support. How long did it take your son to get the acceptance after submitting the application?
@UChicago Hi Hannah, I apologize if my question below is inappropriate.
My son is applying to both Chicago and a UK school. He is torn on whether he should write essays with his usual prose style, which differs from that of a typical high school student.
For example, while most students would simply state “I would love to come to UK to study”, his NATURAL voice would be something like “I long to cross this pond, to touch that sceptred isle, that blessed plot.”
This really is not showing off or anything like that. I know it is out of his genuine feelings.
But would this come across as too over-the-top, overly flowery? Should he go for the plain version instead?
Please advise if you can. Many thanks.
For future readers, I believe the coaches have more influence. I don’t know if there are only a few slots etc, but they have issued likely letters in October to certain athletes. I’m not sure how widespread that is.
I would ask the coach recruiting your child but my impression is that the coaches are at least as influential as other D3 coaches.
Hi @UChicago,
I’m very interested in applying to UChicago but worried about a C grade I received sophomore year in AP Calculus BC. Recently, I created a startup that has been partnering with corporate workspaces to stop the spread of COVID-19. We are thinking about expanding to medical labs after receiving a message from a University. The process would take a week to adapt our technology so we were not sure if it is a good decision. I would be applying to UChicago with demonstrated interest in business, is it worth it to have a recommendation from the Dean of a Medical School/UChicago Medical School?
Hi Hannah and @UChicago , My son is making his senior year schedule, and I was wondering if U Chicago prefers to see AP classes or dual enrollment classes on a transcript. The dual enrollment classes would be from the local community college and he was thinking of taking Statistics and College Writing. However he could take AP statistics at the high school and more AP classes. UChicago is his number one choice right now, so he wants to gear his senior year towards this school and other competitive schools. Thanks!
@UChicago
Hi Hannah,
I applied for Regular Decision and got waitlisted by UChicago and I did not complete the optional video. Can I complete one now and have it considered with my application?
