Hello ZacharyCort, Londondad had it just right-- this ranking situation is something that happens at many schools, and it won’t be a problem for you specifically! We will know that based on the information the school provides.

I just visited your campus yesterday and looked around, but no one seemed to be in the admissions office. Do you give formal tours?

Hello Grace! Thank you so much for this, all of this information is so extremely helpful! I just had three quick questions -

1) Is there any advantages to submitting an application sooner rather than later? (i.e. submitting it on October 1st to October 31st)

2) After having just read what you said, I sent an ACT score back in February. Is there anyway I can check that you guys still have my scores? Should I email my regional admissions officer?

3) I attended a summer program at another university, and have a transcript/credits for the classes I took. Should I send an official transcript along with the rest of my application? Will it be considered in admissions decisions?

Thanks so much for your time, and like I said, this has all been so extremely helpful!

Hello staryulover,

1: nope! Applications aren’t due until November 1 for a reason: we want to give you until then to complete them if you need the time. If you’re done already and want to submit it, go ahead, but we’ll evaluate it the same way whether it’s submitted today or on Oct. 31.

2: Go ahead and e-mail your regional admissions counselor to check.

3: Feel free to send the transcript; it will be completely supplemental, so I can’t say that it will likely have any large impact one way or another, but we will likely glance at it.

Thanks so much!

Do you know to whom and where I would address the transcript to? I emailed my regional counselor about this, but I received a message saying he is away on recruitment travel, and won’t have access to his email on October 24th.

Your transcript and any other necessary mail may be addressed to our general office: University of Chicago Office of College Admissions, 1101 East 58th Street
Chicago, Illinois 60637. We can also accept electronic transcripts submitted by your school counselor through Naviance and other means; they will know what this means if you don’t :)

Thank you so very much again, you are helping so many students right now! :)

Hi Grace! I just have a question about prompt #4:

"While working at the Raytheon Company, Percy Spencer noticed that standing in front of a magnetron (used to generate microwave radio signals) caused a chocolate bar in his pocket to melt. He then placed a bowl of corn in front of the device, and soon it was popping all over the room. A couple of years later, Raytheon was selling the first commercial microwave oven.

Write about a time you found something you weren’t looking for."

Can we talk about something we found that we were not looking for? Or are you guys looking for something that talks about what was actually going on when we found it?

Is there a limit on how many words the personal essay can be for the UChicago prompt? Also, when filling out the common app, are you required to factor in your freshman year GPA as well? or can it just be 10-11 like the UC’s?

Hello Grace,

Can international students apply to UChicago through Quest Bridge National College Match Program? I am copying this from the FAQ’s regarding the Quest Bridge section in the undergraduate admission website of UChicago:

“CAN INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS APPLY TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO THROUGH THE COLLEGE MATCH PROGRAM?
International students who need financial aid may apply through the College Match Program and/or for early action. International admission is need-sensitive, so international students who apply for financial aid are placed in a competitive applicant pool.”

So, does that mean I can apply through the College Match Program if I qualify for financial aid?

Hello AJB1993-- for these essays, you can honestly talk about whatever you want. There’s no right answer to any of them.

Hello crawlings-- we suggest you keep your essays to around 500 words apiece. Also, you should report your GPA for the entirety of high school, which would include 9th grade in most areas.

Hello masterclass, to apply through the College Match program, you must first be accepted as a finalist through Questbridge, which first requires an application to their program specifically; if you are selected as a Questbridge finalist, you may apply through the match program even as an international student. If you are not selected as a finalist, you will go through the regular process of applying for financial aid as an international student.

hello Grace!
common app says that uchicago requires 2 teacher evaluations.
i assume that teacher evaluations and recommendation are the same, but in your reply to sindarknave, #199, you said that we need one recommendation from a counselor and two from teachers, which means that 3 teacher evaluations are required. am i getting it right?
Thank you very much!

Hello peterchen-- yes, the counselor rec can be anything from a recommendation to a form they fill out; this will accompany your transcript. So, yes, technically a total of three, two of which must be from teachers.

understood^^

Grace, which UC admissions counselor covers the UK? I noticed that there are 4 international adcoms listed on the website, but which one is most experienced with the British school system? Thanks.

It depends on the school in the UK; some are covered by Mary Hetlage and some by Jim Nondorf. If you have particular questions, e-mail them to internationaladmissions@uchicago.edu indicating where you are from and the school you attend and they will be forwarded to the proper person.

Great, thanks.
