UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Hi Grace,
Would 102 on TOEFL be acceptable? According to the admissions website, 104 is strongly recommended. So, do I need to retake the test?

Hello Generation, we do strongly recommend a 104, so if you do have the opportunity to retake the test and believe you could achieve a higher score, it may be wise to do so.

Hi. If I show how I am only applying to U Chicago early action and is the only school I am applying to early, would that help my chances? Thanks.

Hello wadeformvp3, no, we do not consider whether or not you are applying to other schools as part of our admissions decision.

Hi Grace,
I noticed you said it would be best for ACT/SAT scores to be send in as close to the date of application submission as possible. If I chose UChicago before I took my ACT as one of the colleges to send it to (in order to avoid the extra fee for sending it separately), and this occurred in the spring this year, would it be a good idea to re-send my score? Thanks!

Hello maxxk159-- if you sent us an official copy of your score when you took the test, it should be in your file with us; so, no worries. Earlier I was mainly indicating that it’s not necessary to send your score that early, not that we won’t keep track of it-- we will receive it if you send through an official means.

Hello: I have a question about the computer science department. Many threads talk about how “theory” based the undergrad program is–and that it doesn’t really provide the programming skills required for internships or proper preparation for the job market. Is there someone who I can connect with on this issue? Son is a football recruit–and this is a high priority for both of us–thanks for your help in advance.

computerDad - The Comp Sci department describes itself as being 50% theoretical, 50% applied (and as majors go, comp sci is almost certainly the most applied of all of them). Have a look at the course catalog if you’re worried - your son will certainly get the applied training he needs, though if he can get into UChicago it probably won’t be necessary for him to be in class to learn programming anyway.

Quick question: UChicago only looks at the SAT CR and Math scores, right?

Glaedr-- yes, we look at the SAT on the original 1600 point scale, so, only CR and math.

Thanks for your thoughts. I see your point and I know the curriculum is fine–I am a technology content publisher and have tracked the markets for 25 + years. It looks good to me. My son has worked real hard to get to the point where he definitely qualifies for schools like this one. I just want to make sure that the profs spend time teaching --and not just presenting principles and ask the students to learn on their own time to complete projects. I went to a large state university and that was the case. So, I am very interested in schools who have a solid reputation for profs doing their share of the heavy lifting. I have seen where U Chicago gets good marks for undergraduate teaching–but this can certainly vary by department. However, again, I think you make a very valid point.

hi Grace, how long should the Favorite Things essay be? How long should the Why Chicago essay be?

hi Grace - how does the rushed ACT score work? I’m not exactly sure how the Early Action application can still use the October ACT - do I have to call UChicago personally/the testing company? Is there a fee?

Hello nondairycreamer, between 250-500 words is appropriate for either of these two essays.

Hello quizbowl, there is never a need to “rush” scores to us; if you are taking them in October you can simply indicate that you would like them sent to the University of Chicago through regular sending, and we will receive them in plenty of time to review them.

I am taking the SATs again in the beginning of November, but I am worried that the University of Chicago won’t be able to review these scores in time for early action. Would you recommend submitting an earlier set of SAT scores? And if so, will the university be considering both test score sets in the admissions process? Thanks.

XCyoungXC, we do accept November SAT scores. Many students encounter the need to take the SAT in November, and we are quite used to accommodating the November test date, so, no worries. If you send us earlier scores, we will “superscore” between the two sets, combining your best sub-section scores from either sitting in to one score for you.

Hi Grace,

Does UChicago ever establish maximum quotas for a school or area? For example, if several applicants applying from a school prove competitive for admission, are some rejected simply because Admissions will accept only one or two students from that area? Thanks again!

Hi Grace, I’m applying EA to UChicago and am not planning to major in art; however, I have been preparing an arts portfolio on the side for other colleges and scholarships. Should I submit my portfolio as an arts supplement? Would it help me in any way?

For the extended supplemental essay, is a little over 600 words enough or should I add more?
