UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

collegekang, sorry for the confusion. We use the same metric that the ACT uses, which rounds up for fractions one-half and higher.

CSIHSIS, we would prefer to receive your two main teacher recs from teachers who have had you in core academic subjects-- usually history, English, math, or the sciences. If you have taken, say, a foreign language or music class where you’ve written papers or read books in that language (most Latin courses, for example, or advanced levels of many foreign languages, or music history courses), then they would be fine required recs; while we love your band conductors and your beginning foreign language teachers for your supplemental recs, due to the nature of those courses they tend not to be able to tell us things about how you write, analyze material, or contribute to a discussion, which is really why it’s valuable for us to hear from core teachers principally.

On my Uchicago account, it said that my HS transcript was recived, while my recs and HS report are still pending. I send all three materials in one package. Has Ucicago lost some, or should I just wait?

Hi Grace,

My UChicago account is showing that the Admissions Office has received everything (yay!). There are green check marks next to “Teacher Rec 1” and “Teacher Rec 2” but the problem is I submitted an additional rec from an EC leader which isn’t showing up on my account. How do I know that all three of my recs have been received and are being reviewed? I’d hate to think that my file looks like it includes one teacher and one EC leader and no rec from a second teacher.

Thanks in advance.

zhangvict, we’re still processing a lot of material on our end; it is likely that we separated them from the envelope they were sent in and parts have been processed, while other parts haven’t. Rest assured that even if it doesn’t appear in your account we likely have it, or, if we don’t, we will contact you (or anyone else with this same question) to obtain a replacement if we need one.

Plannergirl, we do read them through very briefly before we input them, so rest assured that we did not enter your optional rec as a required rec.

So I was submitting a supplementary research abstract from something I did over the summer, but I accidentally uploaded it twice. It shows up as “Supp Research” twice in my account, but it won’t let me delete one of them. 2 identical copies uploaded.

Will it make a difference or am I just freaking out over something trivial? Feeling like it’s the latter hahaha.

Thanks Grace!

Hi grace!
I got a general email today that said that I have materials missing, does this count as the official email? I had sent in the missing materials with something that was received, so im not sure if I should start freaking out yet! Thanks (:

^ yeah I just got an email too, but I sent everything in… Should we resend our stuff? If so, what if they don’t arrive by November 18(which the email says they should arrive by)?

Hey Grace,

So I got the same problem as Staryulover, except that nothing that I had sent by mail has been received yet.

Also, it appears on the checklist that I havn’t paid my application fee, but I wrote a note in the additional information section of the Common App that I would like to request that my application fee be waived, as your website told me to do. But how would you guys see this note if you don’t (I assume) begin looking at the applications until everything is submitted.

Yes, all, this counts as the official e-mail. Please resend the documents as suggested in the e-mail; I am not involved in processing so I do not know what their particular instructions are for resubmitting, but do whatever they say :)

Hello again,
I got the e-mail saying that I’m missing parts of my application. The two things that I’m missing are the two items that I mailed: my transcript, and my Secondary School Report. This is what the instructions for submitting these materials say:

"Official High School Transcripts: Please ask your school to send an official copy of your high school transcript to our office by mail.

Secondary School Reports: Please ask your school counselor to submit the Secondary School Report by mail, fax, or e-mail to Matt Cowell, Systems Coordinator, at mcowell@uchicago.edu."

Does this mean I can’t send these documents myself? I did not have my school send them before— is this why they are missing? As AimingForIvy asked, what if the documents don’t arrive by November 18th?

Thanks.

Hey Grace,
Before I ask my questions, I want to thank you for spending time on the CC forums to help applicants like us. We are truly thankful for what you’re doing here.
I have just two questions:

 1. I sent in my Common Application on November 1st around 4 PM PST, but the common application website said that you received them November 2nd. Will this cause problems with my early application?
 2. I received scores from my October ACT after November 1st and, because it was pretty good, I want to send the scores in. Do I have to contact the admission office and send them manually (if I can at all)?

Hey Grace,

“If you do not see your documents in your account, please do not call or e-mail us to check whether they are missing or in process. We will contact you if we find that a required application document is missing, and we will give you ample time to re-submit it."

This is what i find on UChicago’s website. Now I have received an email telling me that some of my documents are missing. But Fedex has told me that my package has delivered to UChicago on Nov 1. why is uchicago saying that they did not receive my package? are you still in process? Or Can I send an email or call uchicago for this issue? As an international student, mailing the materials costs a lot and requires several days for the materials to go to US, so I really dont want to send them again. Please help~

Thanks for answering our questions these days^^ Your answers help a lot!

Hi Grace, I’m just curious as to when the admissions officers start reading the applications. Do they read it right after we submit all our materials? and around when does the ‘first read’ end for EA applicants? thanks.

JAlfred and PeterChen, please follow the instructions contained in the e-mail to resubmit the documents. We would prefer if your school sent them to us directly. If you are worried about their receipt via mail, please e-mail them or fax them to Matt Cowell. You should make every effort to have your documents arrive by the 18th, and fax and e-mail options make this a possibility even for international students. We still have documents in process, so if you are wondering about which documents we have received, please e-mail your regional admissions counselor.

Hello Lucidream, no, this is not a problem; we traditionally download your application after the deadline. You may send along those scores if you wish, but it is not necessary.

Hello jfas, we begin first-reading applications when they are complete; however, with the volume of applications we receive, even applications complete by Nov. 1st may not be ready until much later in the cycle. There is no official end date for our reading, but we do hope to have all missing student documents received by Nov. 18th.

In your opinion, do you think the acceptance rate will continue to plummet (I see best 351 colleges books from 2007 that say it was 40%!)? How is the EA acceptance rate - is it better or worse than RD?

Hi! on my application status it says I’m missing my high school report, transcript and sat scores. my counselor sent the report and transcript
on the last week of October and she says they should be
there by now… also, my sat scores are sent on Oct. 30.
i feel like i can’t control these things and don’t know what to do . Although they should be there by now what happens if they
don’t arrive in the office by Friday? is it possible that
all the forms have arrived but haven’t been processed through? thanks!

also, i put 5730 South Ellis Avenue Chicago, IL 60637
this address on the envelope which is different from the address on
the application status… (1101 E. 58th St., Suite 105 Chicago, IL 60637 ) did i make a stupid mistake??? or is it ok?

Hi Grace,

On my UChicago account, it indicates that I have submitted Teacher Rec 1 and Teacher Rec 2. I submitted three teacher recommendations because I had three in my naviance account, and my guidance counselor sent them all because UChicago accepts three. Will I know which recs the admissions committee will review? Or will they review all three?

Thanks again for all your answers!

Early action to Chicago at 8698!

littlepenguin, we will review all three. Usually your Chicago account only registers the two required recs, since we do not require a third-- but we will certainly review a third if you have sent it.
