UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

fp5858, we disabled the checklist once we had verified that we had received materials from all students-- no need to worry, if we did not contact you you may assume your application is complete.

Jasmine, I’m sorry, that information is not available at the moment.

Grace,

My son’s counselor got a call from his U Chicago admissions rep last week inquiring about his “intentions” since we are an active alum family at another school (guess which one.) My son had actually just been accepted ED at an all together different school. (We informed U Chicago of this officially to withdraw his application, but the notification hadn’t been received by you guys yet at the time of the call to the counselor.) Is this standard procedure for kids being considered for admission-- check up on them if they have strong family ties to a different school? Could it mean he was being considered for merit money? (Is it tacky that I’m curious even tho he’s going to another school?) We don’t want to ask any of his friends if they got a similar call because it feels like we might just be adding stress to their college decision waiting game. Choosing his ED school over U Chicago was not an easy choice for him because U Chicago is such an incredibly unique and magical place. Thanks for any insight.

Hi Grace,

I have a question that is not entirely related to the admission process, but I hope it won’t take too much of your time. Are the admission officers also engaged in university teaching and research? I can imagine that you are busy with our applications every year from November to April with some short breaks in between, which would leave you with only a few ‘free’ months off the school year. How in reality do you divide your time between the admission work and the academic job?

DukeShama, thanks for your question—we often reach out to counselors with whom we are familiar to quickly check up with them once admissions decisions at ED schools have been released, just as a reminder to have them encourage ED accepted students to withdraw their application from us. We do not know where other students have applied or assume that a student is applying to a particular school based on family ties; this was likely a general reach-out on your admissions counselor’s part.

xxxamazexxx, interesting question-- most of us devote ourselves full-time to this job, as it is intense and, at times, much more than a full time commitment! We do not have any counselors who are involved in University teaching and research, although we do have admissions counselors who are involved in part-time graduate programs (the executive program at Booth, for example), write/perform in the Chicago theater scene, belong to professional choral groups, and work as a “dean on call” for current students who need assistance in an emergency. There are times of the year when it is certainly possible to balance another responsibility, and other times when it is important to devote yourself 100% to this job.

Hey Grace!
I was wondering if you might know what time we can expect decisions to be available?

Thanks so much for your help!

We are still finalizing an exact time but expect to be releasing decisions before 5pm CST.

Grace, what if the ED admittee requires financial aid and still waiting for the finaid package?

Convivial, in this circumstance we encourage you to exercise your best judgment and withdraw your application from us if/when you officially accept your offer of admission from your ED school.

Hi Grace! How terrible would it be if I had more than 2 paragraphs for the UChicago essay - say, three or four small ones but around 300 words?

Did UChicago reject anyone who applied early action? I haven’t heard of anyone getting rejected, just deferred like I was :’(

Hi Grace, I was just wondering what you recommend for those who have been deferred EA. I know that the update says that we can contact our region’s advisor to update on new activities/grades etc., but will the updates make a significant difference in the decision? What are some common updates that the admissions board is looking for?

Also, would it be a good idea if our counselors contacted UChicago to reaffirm dedication to the school?

Thanks :)

Hi Grace,

I was just wondering if accepted students are going to be notified of merit-aid scholarships in the future? (or was it in today’s letter?) If so, when?

Thanks a lot!

Hi Grace,

I got deferred, and I would like to reaffirm my interest for UChicago by sending an email (or letter, may I know which is preferred?) to my regional counsellor. May I know if there is a list somewhere that shows which regional counselor is in charge of which region?

Grace,

I just can’t thank you enough for all the help you provided through this thread. Thanks for always helping us out!

Can’t wait to be a Maroon!

Hey Grace,
So I still have not received a decision from Chicago (I checked email and the website) and I’m just wondering if I should have?.. The website says decisions are available but mine is not.

What was this year’s EA admit rate?

Hello,

I just uploaded a research abstract into the “Upload Materials” section of my UChicago account. I specified that it was “Supp Research.” However, in the actual document itself, I did not have a statement indicating where this research abstract came from or when I actually wrote my report. I did not put the contact information of my research mentor in the actual document either. My mentor will write a letter or recommendation that will be mailed to the admission office. Is there any way I can delete my uploaded abstract and upload another document with my mentor’s contact information and the context of the research report? Is it OK that I do not have these two elements in my already uploaded abstract?

Thanks for your time.

Hi Grace,
I was deferred, but I’m very interested in attending UChicago. I have revised my Common App personal statement, and I have a few small changes in my Extended Essay. Can I submit these to be considered when my application is reevaluated? If so, should I upload them to my UChicago account or email them to my regional counselor?
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer everyone’s questions!

Hi Grace,

I fully understand that every appicant is evaluated holistically, but I heard from a counsellor that usualy, SAT scores are important for international students as rigor of education and other factors vary with schools? is a minimum of around 650 needed in all sat sections? How bad is it if I have high 700s in mathematics but merely higher 500 in reading but my TOEFL scores do qualify? Is that going to hurt me terriby? How important is the popularity of my school? Is an applicant from renowned school given more priority than not so famous one?
