Update: still no decision… I didn’t do the financial aid checklist thing but I assumed that was something to be done if admitted… plus I did not get an email saying that my app was incomplete. I’m really confused…

Hi Grace,

Is the EA applicant pool generally stronger than the RD applicant pool according to past experience? If so, how big is the difference, usually?

arrness, yes, that is a fine length.

college1123, yes, we accepted, deferred, and denied students Early Action.

drewlol and other deferred students, please see my separate “Advice for Deferred Students” thread.

s1mpleton, here is a handy map for finding out who your regional counselor is: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/contact/map.shtml
An e-mail is preferred.

DarthSpawnus, congratulations and welcome to the class of 2016!

2004726, please call our office at 773-702-8650 and we will help you troubleshoot the problem.

marleyluber, we do not separate our EA admit rate from our RD rate-- I will let you all know what our overall acceptance rate is in April.

ewq555, this is not a problem-- you are fine. Thanks for sending a research supplement regardless!

khittee, I cannot comment on your particular scores; our only strongly suggested minimum score is a 104 for TOEFL, and all other scores (for international and domestic students alike) are evaluated holistically in the context of your application.

shootastar, it is difficult to answer that question; while we do tend to see many strong students in Early Action, we see similarly strong students in Regular Decision as well!

yastoopid (sorry this is out of order, I missed your question initially): we did send out some merit scholarship notifications to EA admitted students with their acceptance letter; our scholarship committee meets monthly until April, so students who were not notified of a scholarship may still receive one.

Hi Grace,

In terms of merit scholarships, if you’ve already been accepted, but are hoping to receive a merit scholarship, is it worth sending in new material, etc., that could possibly boost your chances? I.e., if a research project reaches a point where an abstract could be submitted, would it be acceptable to send that in for the scholarship committee’s consideration?

Thanks!

kiwigirl, all admitted students should contact their area officer with questions about merit scholarships; the area officer will be more helpful in deciding whether or not a particular achievement should be sent in or not.

Hi Grace!

I was just wondering if you can give us an estimate of how many people were deferred. I want to keep everything in perspective and hopefully I’ll have a nice shot at RD round. Thanks so much for your helpful responses on CC! UChicago’s attentiveness to outreach never ceases to amaze me!

Is there a reason why the University of Chicago does not seem to value transparency and timely disclosure. Most schools have now learned that there are no real reasons to continue to obfuscate admission data such as the Common Data Set and delay announcements of early and regular data. Everyone understands that the preliminary information released rarely corresponds to the actual number, but Chicago could borrow a few pages from others in this context.

Hey Grace.

I was just wondering how much (if at all) attending the same school as other strong applicants to UChicago effects my chances of admission? I heard that elite schools prefer not to accept too many students from one particular public school. Also, if one student from my school who accepted EA was accepted into a binding program would that increase my chances?

Hi Grace,

Generally speaking, how likely is Chicago to consider a financial aid appeal? I got in, but my financial aid package was absolutely ludicrous (i.e. $0). Chicago has long been my top choice, but there’s simply no way my middle-class family can scrounge up $60,000 a year, especially when I’ve been offered significant merit packages at other schools. Is it at all likely that Chicago will reconsider my financial situation? Thanks for the help!

Hi Grace,
Can you tell me anything about outdoor opportunities at Chicago? I love hiking and rock climbing and mountain climbing and biking and skiing, so I’m a bit nervous about moving to such an urban area. Is there an active outdoors club? Thanks

Looking at the admitted students website I counted 1573 admitted students. This is almost certainly not entirely accurate but is probably in the right ball park. This would give an acceptance rate of 18.1%.

Grace, when will you start reviewing RD applications?

Hi Grace,

How important are extra-curriculars and leadership positions a factor to UChicago in choosing students?

Thanks!

Hey Grace, around how many early applications are deferred? I was deferred and I was looking on the website… we should send our regional admissions officer an email claiming why uchicago is still our first choice? How should that differ from the Why uchicago essay supplement?

Grace-
I was deferred from EA as a QuestBridge applicant and when I was talking my counselor about it, she told me when some schools defer you, it basically means that you aren’t getting in so start looking around for other schools. Is this true of UChicago?

thanks

santabarbie - the deferred section states 10% of the students get admitted.

Chicago had an overall rate of 15.8% last year. You do the Math.

Hi Grace,

I applied to Early Action and go deferred. I did not ask for an interview then as I have my final examinations that lasts throughout November, and I was unsure whether the interviewer and I could arrange for a suitable timing. However, my exams are over now and I wonder if I could still ask for an interview to allow the school to know me better, so that hopefully UChicago could accept me during Regular Decision. If I could do so, may I know if there are any special procedures that I should follow?

Thank you very much!

Hi Grace,

I was deferred from EA, and I was wondering if it’s okay to ask admissions why I was deferred. There was really no mention that UChicago did not want that, but I wanted to make sure if the officers were against it or anything. It would be helpful to me to get some feedback on why my application wasn’t strong enough if possible.

Thank you!
