Grace, i know that uchicago accepts transfers for both years, but i was wondering if there was any preference. i know that some universities would rather admit junior transfer students rather than sophomores

How many Questbridge Match applications did you receive last year and how many were actually accepted?

Hello Wheatbread, the transfer acceptance rate varies widely from year to year; in any given year we are accept around (although this is not a hard and fast number-- we do not have a quota for the number of transfer applicants we must accept) 30 to 40 transfer students.

Hello Sylvanslie, this is a great question-- there is no need to send in a supplement in the arts unless your submission reflects an extraordinary level of talent. While it’s great to hear that students are interested in arts, music, etc. extracurricularly or as a hobby, you’re still welcome to let us know about this somewhere on your application without sending a supplement; I tend to suggest that students only submit a supplement if it is an activity for which 1. written documentation does not do the skill justice and 2. the student has been recognized at at least the regional, if not the state or national level, for the skill.

Hello mjmay, sorry for not fully grasping your question before! There’s no specific preference.

Hello FafsaParent, Questbridge is a relatively new program for us, and we welcome Questbridge applicants! We do tend to have one of the higher match rates of partner colleges, although no official acceptance statistic for the program-- we tend to range anywhere between 10 and 40 students per year accepted through the program.

Ms. Chapin,
I read a student account from the University of Chicago that said that the Core consumes the first two years of classes at the college. Is this an accurate assessment of the core curriculum? I know there are about 12-15 courses that you have to take in the various distributions but is there some flexibility in when you can take them across your four years at the school? Does the core interfere at all with possibly double majoring or just pursuing various academic interests independent of the core during your first two years? Thank you for taking questions about the University.

Hello, I will be an uprising senior and I am interested in applying to the University of Chicago. I would like you to be very blunt with me and tell me if my scores match with what UChicago is looking for, and any helpful advice.

Weighted GPA: 4.1
ACT: Composite-30 (Eng-33, Math-27, Reading-32, Science-27)
Class Rank: 18 out of 534 (top 5%)

Hi There!
I was wondering if we are allowed to have images within our essay question uploads (as only one of the prompts specifically states that they are allowed).
Thanks

My brother went to UChicago and always told stories about the ‘that kid’ in his Humanities class. Is that really something to worry about? He showed me this site and it kind of freaked me out. #STKS ( post has the word **** in it so the url won’t show up, its ****thatkidsays.com though )

Can any student try out for varsity sports or are the teams made based on recruited athletes?

This is not a chance thread so I don’t think UChicago would say anything. Your chance is 0 if you don’t apply.

Hi grace,
I’m an international student, so I’m wondering if admissions to u chicago are need-blind for internationals, even though financial aid may be limited.
Also, your computer science degree will come under a science degree right?

Thanks!

Hi Grace,

I heard that UChicago bases admissions heavily on “character and personal traits” of the applicant. If this is true, can I assume that this will be based majorly on the supplement?

Hello Zanmilasante, great question-- I’d say that “consumes” is definitely not the way I’d describe it. While Core courses will comprise the majority of your first year, there is still some room for elective/major coursework in that year, and by second year one is usually taking a very good mixture of core/non-core work. You are highly encouraged to finish most of the core in your first and second years, but many students leave one or two core courses for third or fourth year. Overall, the Core takes up about a third of your time in the College-- one of the other thirds will be taken up by your major, and the third third can either be for electives, a second major, or a minor + electives.

Hello i8themonster, yes, you may include images; to my knowledge the Common Application does not allow one to attach additional images alongside an essay upload, so please make sure to embed the images in your essay document, and preview the document through the Common App before sending it off to us to make sure everything works.

Hello dobrien,

That website is hilarious, but is a caricature of “that kids” as they exist in nature. Yes, every once in a while you’ll have an annoying kid in your class-- someone who talks a little too much or believes a little too staunchly in this or that or doesn’t quite know when to quit, even if (when) the professor shoots down their idea-- but “that kid”, although we kind of pretend they are, is not a UChicago-only phenomenon, and can be found in the hallowed halls of many a great university. As Smokey the Bear said (and I changed rather badly), only YOU can prevent (that kid syndrome): just make sure you’re not That Kid, and you’ll be just fine.

Hello ca2012, while we do have walk-on athletes, most of our student athletes are recruits; if you’re interested in participating in varsity athletics, feel free to contact the coach of the sport you are interested in here: [University of Chicago Athletics](http://athletics.uchicago.edu/)

Hello LFCYNWA, we are not need-blind for international students, but we do guarantee to meet 100% of demonstrated need for international students who apply for aid and are accepted to the College. You can learn more about our international aid policy here: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/costs/international.shtml

Hi Grace,
My high school does not use a standard GPA system. Our system runs on a 5-point-scale, and honors and AP classes are weighted at 6.0, one point higher. Will that be a problem for me in applying to UChicago?
