UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

And, CC lovelies, I know you want me to be able to answer everything, but I simply can’t-- I am not able to “chance” you or provide any information about our admissions process that can’t be learned in from our presentations or website. I can and will, however, emphasize the fact that our admissions process is a holistic one. We look at ALL of your application, not just your scores and grades (although they are part of the package, they are not the only portion), and so please know that all parts of your application are really important to us.

I took three years of biology and one year of chemistry because I like biology. Should I take physics, as well?

Hello lalalala1, we recommend that students take 3-4 years of laboratory science; you seem to have satisfied that already, although I’m not going to discourage you from taking an additional year’s worth of science (especially physics-- it’s a great subject!). I’d encourage you to speak with your high school counselor to see if taking physics or taking a different class would be a better option for you.

I don’t have a question but I just wanted to thank you for doing this. Much appreciated.

Hello Ragostr, nope, not a problem at all-- this information will be noted on your transcript, and our admissions counselors are well-versed in looking at different types of grading scales on transcripts, as they do vary widely between different schools.

How do admission officers look at the essays? Are they attempting to find the personal, peculiar specific person or do they have some certain criteria

I was on the common app and there was an “early admission (for juniors only)” option… Can you explain to me what that is exactly?
Thank you so much! :)

Does the University of Chicago offer any type of financial assistance to students who are applying as independent?

Thank you very much for your time, Ms. Grace.

Hello Nelsonjchen, for our UChicago essays, we’re really just looking for something well-written that tells us more about you and how your brain works; this is especially true for our uncommon prompt, which we have written specifically because there is no “right” answer to it. Just engage with the prompt in whatever way you choose, and let your thoughts and ideas shine through! If I had to pick one thing we are looking for, it is at the very basic level a coherent (note: creative is fine, but creative to the point of incoherence should be avoided) and well-edited essay.

Hello LesleyCordero, I will check with the system to see why this is appearing-- we do not offer an early admission program for juniors. Our Early Action program allows seniors to submit an application by November and hear back from us in the middle of December.

Hello Student22664-- independent students are eligible to go through the financial aid process, but I think it would be best for you to discuss your situation and options with the office directly; you may find out more information at [Office of College Aid | The University of Chicago College Admissions](http://collegeaid.uchicago.edu/)

Hello, can you tell me how much storage capacity is there in the South Campus doubles? (How much closet space per person, how much drawer/shelving is there, etc.)

Also, is there one closet or two in the SC doubles?

Thank you!

Hello, I was wondering whether or not prospective student athletes are evaluated in the same manner as other applicants, or is it a slightly different process? Thank you.

Is there a possibility for non degree students just to come over for one year or maybe two semesters?

Hi again, I have a question regarding supplemental recommendation letters. I have a scientific research mentor that will be submitting a supplemental letter on my behalf. Can he use the standard common app teacher rec form (By just adding another “teacher” above the minimum two), or does that need to be sent separately? While he isn’t technically my teacher, submitting the form through the common app would save lots of postage and prevent him from having to copy out 10-15 letters.

Hello La7ency, I’m unfortunately not very familiar with the closet setup in South Campus; you may want to join your house’s Facebook group or ask this in a separate thread to get a good estimation of the amount of space you could expect.

Hello Kali22, yes, prospective athletes are evaluated in the same manner as other prospective students.

Hello Northernflow, yes, we do allow students to apply for non-degree-seeking work through our Student at Large Program: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/applicants/studentsatlarge.shtml

Please note that this program is only open to full-time students at other universities who have not already received a bachelor’s degree.

Thank you very much for your help
