UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Hello Heyimpeter, this is a hard one to answer, especially since I can’t speak for other colleges; what I will say is that we get excited to see you excited, whether in the arts or another field. We’ve seen students excited about bowling, classical music, literary magazines, tennis, textiles, pottery, Latin, goat herding (well, maybe not goat herding)… if you have a passion, we’ll be happy to see it highlighted on your application, whatever it may be.

Hi,

Are there any restrictions on which teachers can provide letters of recommendations? Do foreign language teachers count?

^I am also curious about oonmaster’s question. Does a yearbook/journalism advisor/teacher count as an academic recommendation?

@both of you: we would prefer that these recs come from teachers in core academic subjects-- think of the big four: English, Social Sciences/Social Studies (this could be History, Economics, or something else in the field), Mathematics, or something in the Sciences. You are welcome to submit a third, optional recommendation from someone else who knows you well, and a foreign language teacher, journalism teacher, band or orchestra conductor, etc. would be a perfectly acceptable choice for that.

Have you discontinued the Merit Full Tuition Scholarship program? I cannot find it on UoC web site any more. If that program still existed, does the program award to international applicant, however small the probability is?

And where can I find the $5K and $10K merit scholarship program?

For the length of the essay, how much is “greatly exceeding 500 words?”
For example, if one of the applicant’s essays is 700 words, is that a big problem?

@artloversplus-- we still have some select full-tuition scholarships, mainly for students in the Chicago Public Schools system and children of active-duty police and fire members, as well as some regionally-based scholarships. General merit scholarships come in $5, $10, and $15k per year denominations, and international students are considered for them as well. Here is all of the information about scholarships: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/costs/merit.shtml

Hello AJB1993-- yes, 700 words does greatly exceed 500 words. I’d say you could increase or decrease by 10% (so, 50 words either direction) and still be on target, but please please stay as close as possible to the 500 word suggested limit.

Thanks.

but I what I meant was from recollection, last year there was some thing called “presidential” merit full tuition scholarships that were offered to general applicants based on their scholastic achievements. For some reason, the number 20 sticks in my mind, which was offered. Has that been changed, elimated or It was for CPS students to begin with?

Thanks for the answer! Just a little add on to that: Is that just for the UChicago essays, or would you like that for the Common App essay as well?

Hey grace, I participated in a Summer Session Program at the University of Chicago studying Chinese and received an official transcript. Could I mail the transcript along with my application to the university so I can receive college credit if accepted?

First of all, thank you so much for doing these, they’re incredibly informative. Second of all, I saw on the website that you guys accept music supplements for admissions. Assuming that these are on the Common App, what level would you consider requisite for a submission? Would an all-state musician qualify, or are you guys only really looking for people of conservatory quality?

@AJB1993-- the Common App essay is a little trickier on overages because they have a character limit; 500 words is a good length for it, but do check to see that it all fits on the page by doing a print preview before you submit.

@Coolguy86-- yes, you can send along that transcript.

@2000206: thanks for the kind words! For music supplements, we would very much prefer to receive only supplements that reflect a high level of skill and preparation; being recognized at the all-state level or above is a good metric for this.

Would you consider a rec from my Alevel General Paper teacher as one from a social sciences/studies teacher?

I’m not as familiar with the A-level system and the courses you’ll take through it; I’d suggest you contact the International admissions team with this question; internationaladmissions@uchicago.edu.

If a teacher wants to mail an LOR, what is the address where it needs to go? I am looking at the website but there are no specific instructions other than saying it can be mailed.

Grace, can you elaborate about the scholarship to national merit finalist? I am semifinalist now, and applied finalist. Thanks

Grace,
My daughter will be attending UofC info session in DC in Oct. Any insight to what occurs at these sessions? Does the admission staff member responsible for DC or Northern VA attend?
