Hello yxb03100, if you are a National Merit finalist, list UChicago as your first choice, and do not elect to seek any of the corporate scholarships through National Merit, you will receive $1,000 per year (if you do not qualify for need-based financial aid) or $2,000 per year (if you do qualify for any aid).

Hello Sallies, great question! Our “Chicago Visits You” information sessions include a discussion of both student life/academics as well as a discussion of the admissions and financial aid process at UChicago, with plenty of time for questions at the end. Sessions usually last about 1 hour and are hosted by the admissions representative for the area where the session is held.

Question about the 5th essay choice (choose your own topic). How much will it cost me if I just recycle another common essay topic, e.g. someone who has affected you, and use that as my UChicago essay? What kinds of topics do you guys look for if someone chooses to make their own–does it have to be creative or can it just be anything that leads to a good essay about themselves?

Could you elaborate on the CPS scholarship for me? I am a CPS student and am very hopeful of possibly receiving this scholarship, but I am sure the criteria is extremely tough. It is my understanding that all CPS students are automatically considered, but could you tell me a little info on what exactly is evaluated and how the recipients are chosen? Also, how many CPS Scholarships are available each year?

Hello zach12, for the optional essay prompt, we’d really like to encourage you to create a prompt similar in style to those we’ve already proposed; we know that some people may have ideas floating around that don’t go with our prompts, but what we’d like to see with a “create-your-own” is the kind of creativity and engaging the question that would happen with one of the prompts we have written. I’d very much caution you or other students against using a generic prompt (we will be happy to hear about a person who has inspired you through your Common Application personal statement, which we also review) or using a prompt that you may also be using for another school or scholarship competition. While we know applying to many schools takes time, it’s really important for us to have this essay as an opportunity to see how your brain works in our sort of creative, more unconventional way.

Hello Seolkim: through the CPS scholarship, we award full-tuition four-year scholarships to a select number of graduates of Chicago Public Schools who are admitted to the College of the University of Chicago. Awards are made to outstanding students who show the greatest potential for making contributions to the academic, extracurricular, and community life of the College. There are no GPA or SAT cutoffs for the scholarship; we’re really just looking for the kinds of qualities in a student named above. The number of students awarded the scholarship varies year to year. We will also waive the application fee for all CPS applicants.

Can research mentor send supplemental recommendation via fax? if yes, what is fax number?

In the case of a student from a high school that, while quite rigorous, offers a summary of teacher evaluations rather than letter grades, does not have class rank, and does not (due to size and philosophy) offer AP or honors classes, would U of C simply put proportionally greater weight on other measures such as SATs, recommendations, etc?

Does U of C have admissions committee members that “specialize” in the evaluation of applicants with somewhat non-traditional educational backgrounds?

Thanks.

Hello snow2008, yes, if necessary, although we would prefer them by snail mail. The fax number is 773-702-4199. Please make sure the cover sheet and letter both clearly articulate the name of the student the letter is being sent on behalf of.

Hello marcbos, great question! We work on a regional counselor system, so we’re all specialists for schools in our areas; through our work with schools and regions, we get to know what transcripts for different kinds of schools mean. Some students are on 4.0 scale, some 5.0, some out of 100, some, like you, have no letter grades… in some way it seems like many schools have something “non-traditional” about them. Rest assured that your regional counselor will know and be able to explain to others the particular intricacies of your school, and will evaluate your transcript in that context.

I’ve scheduled an on-campus interview for the second week of November and was wondering if I should bring a resum

Hello Chickenfriedryce, our interviews are not the kind where we’re going to ask you about your resume or your application-- they are very much more conversational and get-to-know-you. I’d suggest coming prepared to talk about things like your favorite books, and especially coming with any questions you have about UChicago; if you need to write those down to make sure you ask everything that’s perfectly fine, but there’s certainly no need to bring a resume.

Hello, I have some questions about the ACT scores. I have taken them two times, and I am happy with my superscore, but not so happy with the individual scores in some sections on one of the tests. I am aware that in order to superscore, I must send all score reports in. So will the admissions officer see ALL my scores (even the low ones) or JUST the highest ones? I am afraid that these lower scores that are not included in the superscore may hurt me.

Also, I am apply EA to UChicago! But, I am taking the ACT my third and final time in October. When I apply, I will probably send my two previous scores, but I might want to send in my third score report too, depending on how I do. Will I be able to send this report in and still have it superscored with the others in time? Thank you so much for your time!

Dear Grace, I have notoced that UC is becoming increasingly popular among UK applicants. How does UC evaluate the academic performance and potential of kids in the British secondary school system? Do you like to see some diversity of A-Level subjects, or is more on a case-by-case basis? Are there alumni interviewers that live in London? Thanks, Londondad

Hello scscience, yes, while we will see the individual subsections, since we superscore we will truly only consider your best scores in individual sections; the higher scores will be the only ones that matter to us. Also, we will accept October scores for the EA deadline (and November SAT scores, for those looking in and wondering).

And hello londondad, our international admissions team also reads regionally, and we have counselors who know the intricacies of the UK school system and what represents a strong and well-rounded curriculum at particular schools. We do have alumni volunteers in the UK; we are not able to guarantee all students who request one an alumni interview, but students in the UK are certainly welcome to express interest in one, and we will do our best to match the student with a volunteer interviewer.

Thanks for the helpful response.

Grace, thanks for the response and one more question pertaining to the October ACT:
Will we have to get the scores rushed for the EA deadline or can they come in as a regular report?

You can send them as a regular report, we do not need them rushed.

Grace, what is the Hyde Park neighbourhood like? I have heard that is is finally starting to improve a little bit. Where do the UC kids hang out off campus, or do they just stay in the “bubble”? How would you categorize the relatonship between the students and the Hyde Park residents? Thanks.
