UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

jrswish, while we are certainly a school known for our academic rigor, “where fun comes to die” is a slogan on a t-shirt sold by one of our houses on campus (and last I heard, the house used some recent proceeds to purchase a pretty epic big-screen TV and video game system for the lounge-- sound fun to me!) Suffice to say, most of our students find a way to balance the fun of group outings, house events, and clubs or other activities with academics. Other posters have discussed this at length, one example of which is here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-chicago/1282506-where-fun-goes-die.html?highlight=fun+comes+to+die</a></p>

louiejuni, yes, if your mother files US taxes, the prepared tax forms are her tax return.

aastudent, we do not have a date settled yet for our regular decision release but expect that it will be in late March, before April 1. We will send students an e-mail informing them that their decisions are available to be viewed in their UChicago account. Admitted students will receive follow-up information an an acceptance packet in the mail; waitlisted and denied students will only receive online notification. We do send out likely letters, but only a very, very small number of students receive these letters. The vast majority of our eventually-admitted students will not receive a likely letter.

Hey Grace!
I have recently received my GCE A Level results and certain other academic honors which I have informed UChicago by email on collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu on the 27th of February. However, I have not yet received a reply from them acknowledging my email or telling me that they will add these details to my application. Is this okay? Or should I resend the email?

Hey Grace!
just a random question:
Does UChicago waitlist those who were deferred in the early application?

Thanks!

Hi Grace,
My DS had a major update to his application (major award).
He uploaded a letter to the website a couple of days ago.
Since it is late in the process, is there anything else he should do to bring this to the attention of the admissions group?
Thank you

uChicago a quick question. How many EA were admitted? How many RD apps do you have and for those applicants how many spots?

thank you

Wow, this thread is very helpful! I have a few questions about transfer decisions:

1) When do decisions for transfers typically come out? When did they come out last year?
2) How does a transfer student go about getting an interview if they submitted their application via the common app?
3) And because I’m forever curious… how many transfer applications did you guys receive this year?

Hi jojocircus, it’s possible you’ve received a response by now, but if not, no need to worry-- we do try to personally respond to as many students as possible, but as this is a busy season for us, we sometimes have to prioritize personal responses for students who have asked questions. Rest assured that if you did not receive a response your materials were still noted and added to your file.

babygoindown, we do try to give deferred students as final a decision as we can, but do sometimes wind up placing a small number of deferred students on the wait list.

collegedad, your son is welcome to send his regional counselor a quick email to let them know about the award.

barbie4, we admitted about 1,380 students early action, you can see statistics for UChicago and other schools online through the New York Times “Choice” blog here: <a href=“Early Admissions Statistics 2013 - Interactive Feature - NYTimes.com”>Early Admissions Statistics 2013 - Interactive Feature - NYTimes.com; . Please note that, as we anticipate that not all of our students will accept our offer of admission, the class is NOT 98% full as noted on the blog
We do not yet have finalized statistics available for regular decision, but they will be available through the Choice blog as well as likely our own news site and the Chicago Maroon when settled.

smewshie, we are usually able to let transfer applicants know their admissions decision around the beginning of May. Interviews are no longer available for transfer applicants on campus, but when you receive access to your UChicago Account online (likely sometime this week or next week), you’ll have the option to express interest in having one with an alumni interviewer in your area through the account. We are still processing a lot of the material submitted to us by transfer applicants, so we don’t yet have a solid sense of how many applications we’ve received.

Hi Grace, I emailed my regional counselor a statement of continued interest/what I have been doing lately. Should I expect a response or acknowledgement of receipt?

One more quick question…very excited and nervous for the 15th. We are on a trimester and finish finals today. Are this semester grades not relevant?

nebraskagal, we try to respond to every email we receive, but every once in a while something falls through the cracks-- rest assured that your email was received and noted even if you did not receive a personal response.

barbie4, it is not necessary to submit your second-trimester grades for our consideration for regular decision.

Is there a way to reserve housing without actually accepting? I really want to get into a dorm but also want to wait until regular decisions of schools which come out on March 1st

Learninglover, unfortunately, we do require students to officially accept their offer of admission and submit an enrollment deposit before filling out their housing application. All students will be guaranteed placement in a dorm regardless of when they accept their offer of admission, but later on in the cycle, it becomes less possible for us to give every student their first choice placement.

Thanks - I know I might be grasping at straws here, but historically what was the date cutoff at which point Snell-Hitchcock/Max/South got filled?

Hi Grace!
I’m a transfer applicant.
I just want to ask about when will we get our application status account?

Thank you very much!

Hi Grace,

I’m an international applicant. I was looking at my applicant portal today and under the ‘Upload Materials’ section I noticed that something had been uploaded under the category of ‘Other’, however this was uploaded a month after I had uploaded everything else and have no recollection of uploading anything so I’m slightly confused. Any idea what it may be, as in may UChicago have uploaded something or?

Thanks :)

Hi Grace,

Do the financial aid packages come out on the 15th along with the decisions? Or will they be released at a later date?

Thank you!

Hi UChicago,

I have a question regarding the merit scholarship.

My child (EA admit) got a University Scholar Merit Scholarship of $2000 per year in February. From what I have heard that the University Scholar Merit Scholarship always came in $5K, $10, $15K in the past. Is there a new $2k scholarship this year? Or is it mistaken for other scholarship?

Thank you!

learninglover, there is no historical “fill date” for these dorms per se-- we do not actually assign students to dormitories until we have the housing application of every attending student, but your “place in line” is reserved by submitting your enrollment deposit. The available space in each dormitory can range widely from year to year, all depending on the number of spaces available after returning students have been accounted for.

babygoindown, you should receive access to your application status account soon-- we’re a bit backed up preparing to release admissions decisions to our regular decision applicants this Friday, but certainly hope to have all of the accounts out by sometime next week.

peter1412, “other” usually indicates that you or your school sent us material either through the mail or via email that we processed and uploaded-- perhaps you sent us an update of an award that you wanted to share, or your guidance counselor sent us an email letting us know that a midyear report was on its way. There’s no need to worry about this-- “other” is usually just a way for us to classify material that doesn’t fit in to any other category.

koala2, we hope to give all accepted students their financial aid decision alongside their admissions decision. Financial aid decisions may be delayed for students who submitted aid documents after their respective deadlines or who are still missing required aid documents, but we try to process things as quickly (but still accurately) as we can even for these students.

eddi, this is not an error-- this year we have expanded the range of merit scholarships available to include values not previously awarded, such as your son’s $2k award.

Will updated financial aid packages for students admitted under early action be released tomorrow as well?
