UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Another member put this in a thread and I was curious about the same thing:

Although Uchicago was my #1 choice, I was first deferred from early admission… Then waitlisted earlier today… I know that Uchicago’s waitlist is unranked. Does anyone know what the chances are/ how many on average Uchicago accepts from their waitlist? Also, is there anything specific that I should do to get off the waitlist? Lastly, Does Uchicago release waitlist decisions in May, or on a rolling basis?

I was also waitlisted today (similarly, UChicago is my top choice) and am curious as to what the smartest action would be for me to take. Is it appropriate to submit material such as a new essay? I know it varies from school to school.

Hi all, I have created a thread for waitlisted students here, and most of the questions asked have already been covered in my FAQ-- feel free to check it out here.

Financial aid packages for admitted students (including final packages for EA students) will be released throughout the next several weeks. There is still time to submit financial aid material if any material remains missing or unsubmitted (for most students at this point, this will be your 2012 tax returns, but you can and should submit FAFSA/CSS profile if you have not already done so and have been admitted).

Does the aid packages in question also include merit scholarships for EA students? Will all of them be released before April 1st( or around those dates) ? If no, I am an international students that might make a trip to the US to attend the open-days depending on the results, so will it be possible for me to know earlier if I contact my regional counselor ?

Thank you

Just a shout out for Amy, our regional admissons representative who was really helpful and responsive.

And thanks for this thread, it has been very informative.

UChicago, will a student get rejected or waitlisted if they have not sent in their standardized test scores on time before the February 28 deadline?

Hi, UChicago. I have a quick question: I am a transfer applicant. Is my regional admissions counselor the same counselor that servers my region for freshmen applicants? I an unsure of whom to contact with an update. Also, are transfer applicants assigned a region based on permanent home address, or address of current college?
Thank you so much for everything you do here!

Hi Grace,
This is a transfer application. I applied as a freshman in high school. Although I haven’t received any emails regarding my application portla account, I just randomly logged in using my email and password from last year, and I logged in…
Is this the way it should be or I will get new account later??

Thanks a lot!

ulgkaa, most students who will receive a merit scholarship were notified of that this past Friday, but our merit committee continues to meet through April, so it is still possible that some students may hear back about scholarships between now and April.

jamiecakes, I’ll definitely send your shout-out to Amy, thank you!

chris, we do our best to evaluate as much material as we receive from a student-- although it is helpful to us if it comes in by our deadlines, we would not change our decision on a student who we otherwise thought we should admit or waitlist based on the timing of receipt of materials.

passagio-- great question. Although many admissions officers read transfer student applications, all transfer students, regardless of region, are overseen by Mary Hetlage, our transfer student coordinator. We’re all easily able to place new materials in transfer students’ files or to answer transfer student questions, so you may feel free to direct your communications to collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu, and we’ll send them along to Mary if your questions are too specific for someone in our general email account to answer.

babygoindown, for students who have previously applied, we retain and reactivate your past UChicago Account. If you are still able to log in, we’ve retained your account and your new updates will still be posted there as a transfer student.

Hello Grace,

I am currently a freshman in college and i plan to transfer after i finish my sophomore at my current school. My standardized test scores from high school were not up to par for schools like UChicago. Is it posible to retake them now that i am a college student wanting to transfer? if so, is it a worthwhile thing to do since i will have two years of undergrad by the time i transfer?

Thank you!

Will admitted students get a package of information or is the online decision and financial aid the final word?

Pepe, transfer applicants are welcome to retake the SAT or ACT if you feel that your scores could improve over your previous performance.

juhautai, admitted students will receive paper mailings; we are in the process of sending these out to students in most areas.

Hi Grace! Thank you so much for doing this.

I was wondering if there is any difference between the on-campus interviews and the alumni interviews (which presumably can take place in many places). I am planning on visiting the University of Chicago in May and am very interested, but am not sure if I’ll be able to come back for an interview at a later date for financial reasons (even though I am very interested in the school).

Is having an alumni interview where I live (New York) of the same weight to the school as traveling to Chicago and having an on-campus interview there?

Also, when in the college process does one typically have interviews (before applying, after applying…)

Thanks!

@calculator5

On campus interviews and alumni interviews carry the exact same weight in the admissions process–no need to visit campus twice!

Many students actually complete their alumni interviews AFTER they have applied.

Lots more info here! [Interviews | The University of Chicago College Admissions](http://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/visiting/interviews.shtml)

hi! i got 5k of merit, which is great, but i was just offered a significant amount of merit money from my second-choice school. is there any way i could ask uchicago to match that or at least give me slightly more merit aid, or is that just not a possibility?

I have the same question as piratescould. Got into UChicago with no financial aid and the only thing that is holding me back from depositing is the money - I have a full merit ride at USC and got into EECS at UC Berkeley; is there any way to leverage that or should I decide where to enroll based on my current situation?

What determines the placement in dorms – the date when you pay the deposit or the date when you submit the housing request?
We paid the deposit for my son on April 29th, but he would like to be able to go to the overnight event before making the decision about the dorms. I am afraid it is going to be way too late to get the dorm he wants. However, the admitted students web site makes it sound as if the priorities are based on the date when you pay the deposit, so maybe he has time to decide?
Thank you

piratescould and learninglover, I think these conversations would be best to have with your regional admissions counselor.

kajkur, the date you pay your enrollment deposit determines your place in line for housing; so, it would be just fine to submit your final housing choices after visiting campus.

hey Grace,
I am a transfer applicant. While I still haven’t received any emails regarding my portal login information, I was able to login to my UChicago account using the username and password from last year when I applied as a high school student. I just realized that everything is there already, I just did not get the email regarding my UChicago account. Is that normal?
Thank you so much!

babygoindown, we retain and reuse previously used UChicago accounts for transfer applicants-- so yep, you’ll be using this account for your transfer student communications as well! Thanks for checking.
