@Anduar3 LOL Thanks . . . that is exactly how that feels! Expecting it to revert on Friday to something like, “Everyone else’s status has changed. . . .but not yours. Thanks for playing!”
I am also an international student who received the financial aid email. When I replied to it, I got a personal response from an admissions officer. What could this mean!?
@mominohio
As someone on a gap year right now, I’d recommend you give it a bit more thought… especially if it comes down to Chicago with a gap year or Lake Forest.
I agree with above poster. With such a great school like UChicago, I’d definitely take a gap year over attending a mediocre state school.
@ColonelCat
I wouldn’t call Lake Forest a mediocre state school. 1) It’s pretty good, and 2) It’s private.
Still, I took Chicago + gap year over Cornell, so I definitely think (barring financial considerations, of course), that Chicago is far and away worth it over Lake Forest.
@kaarboer My daughter’s first choice is UChicago but she can not put her life on hold for a yr. It may have been the right choice for you but not for her. Besides Lake Forest is offering her scholarships that are very hard to pass up. Did you get wait listed first or were you offered gap year right away? Good luck in the fall!
@Colonelcat Lake Forest is a great school. It is hardly a state school. The student body is about 1500 students with a classroom size of 23 students. They want to know their students and take the time to look beyond the application. Interviews are required and are conducted by the regional admission officer. Please research before making comments.
@mominohio I didn’t mean to offend you. I wasn’t referring to your specific situation but rather generally speaking.
@mominohio Fair enough.
Though I do take issue with two things: 1, if you plan it correctly, you aren’t putting your life on hold for a year (I’ve traveled a lot and am working on Capitol hill right now, for example) and 2, many state schools are excellent! Anyone who says a school like Berkeley or Virginia (or even, say, UT-Knoxville and Montana State) are bad schools is fundamentally incorrect. Being “hardly” like a state school shouldn’t mean “good” by default.
Edit: Oh, and I was waitlisted. They don’t automatically send you from the overall pool to the gap year pool without a stop on the normal waitlist.
Just to add some random rambles, I was on the deferred train since the EA decisions came out. I am so nervous right now and I’m freaking out… So far no college has accepted me. This is such a torture. I think the private colleges’ admission boards must be full of sadists… :’(
Jokes aside, did anyone get any acceptances after getting waitlisted in the EA decisions? I’m on this one facebook group called “class of 2019 uchicago applicants” or something and seems like a select few waitlisted EA people are getting their decisions. Some of them did mention that they were “recruited” or involved in sports in some way.
TL;DRAny EA waitlisted athletes getting their decisions?
@colonelcat there is no offense taken. Everyone has a right to their opinions.
@kaarboer I wish my daughter could wait but certain opportunities have come up that require her to stay on a certain time frame. Gap year is not an option for her.
@gameink348 my daughter is also a member of this group. But has not been on her facebook in weeks. I believe Uchicago waits for mid year reports to sign athletes and for certain sport seasons to be complete. I think this was mentioned on our tour. Hang in there it is almost over.
Hello everyone I was also deferred from EA. I have been reading and researching about the odds and stats on acceptance after EA deferral. Not to stressed, I say this as I look over at my acceptance letter from NYU. If Uchicago says no, then I guess my place is in New York and I am okay with it.
@kaarboer, would you give some more details on your gap year, how Chicago chooses students for it, what support they give, etc., and what you’ve done? Might be more appropriate for a new thread, but my family would really like to hear more!
GUYSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS I’M SUPER STRESSED OUT.
Question: How many of you deferred applicants wrote a Letter of Continued Interest? I know it won’t have a huge effect on the decision, but I’m interested to see who else wrote one.
I’m trying to remain as calm as possible, but so far I’m failing miserably.
@fizzy110 I feel you. Waiting for Uchicago to release admission decisions is like riding a bike. Except the bike is on fire and you’re in hell.
3 more days of hell-fire bicycle riding left.
@Marisa58 I wrote one when I got deferred. One a week later, and one a during the first week of February. I also submitted the optional essay that I didn’t have time to do before, a supplemental writing piece, and another letter of reccomendation. The last letter of continued interest was also a sort of update. My admissions officer thought it was pretty good and attached it to my application. UChicago is my first choice, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed on decison day!
I’m so happy we’re socializing
@TheUnicornPimp Okay, cool! I just wrote one in mid-February and uploaded it to my account.
And I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you as well! I’ll look out for you on the decision thread on Friday.
