Uchicago Transfer Applicants 2017-2018

Rejected too! Not to0 upset because I’m happy with my other acceptances

Honestly at this point idk if I should keep on trying.

@ifownly Hi, congrats on ur acceptance . I want to apply as a transfer to uchicago next year cuz I applied EA and got deferred then rejected this year, so do you have any advice on that cuz I really wanna go to uchicago. Thank you.

I was recently waitlisted, does anyone know the chance of getting off the waitlist? Is it just dependent on the yield from transfer acceptances?

@ifownly Can I ask what was (general) reason for transferring? I am one year into my undergrad and can’t afford to go to my current university. I am planning to transfer to an equivalent university that offers more financial aid. How did you approach the transfer essay ?(Common App)

@transferxcollege my reason was almost purely academic (i.e. a major offered at UChicago simply wasn’t offered at my institution). Also, because I attended a fairly large public university, I felt that I could benefit from smaller class sizes and extra attention to undergraduates (I attended a very small boarding school, so I drew from this experience to show how I thrive in small academic settings). After I listed and explained pretty much all academic reasons for transfer in detail, I also mentioned how our school has limited diversity (70% from one state) and thus inhibits exposure to a wide range of perspectives.

@transferxcollege While I believe that academic reasons are most important (e.g. Yale says in its admission page that successful transfers state clear academic reasons for transfer), I also think that financial reasons are very valid reasons for transfer.

@christine1019 Hey there-- I hope my other posts helped, but one thing I want to note is that UChicago values intellectual inquiry. And one place where you can show your intellectual passion is your uncommon UChicago supplement (those weird but interesting essay questions). Luckily, because I consider myself to be really curious about everything, I think my essay really showcased that. I can’t really give other advice when it comes to essays because there are so many different ways to approach them.

Also, as you know, I studied at UChicago during summer and applied ED. While demonstrated interest is only a minor factor compared to other things, be sure to show in your essays (i.e. why UChicago) why you find UChicago to be YOUR PERFECT fit. I also know a student from my high school who was waitlisted but admitted just three days later after she submitted a long letter of continued interest.

I guess these tips are UChicago specific, but there are other things I want to point out.

Your recommendations from professors will be really important. You only have one semester to build your connections with profs. I frequently visited my professors during their office hours, and in the perspective of professors they really value that you care about course materials (one of my profs said that). Prof recs hold more weight than your HS recs because professors often like to be frank. They can always agree to write recs and then produce mediocre letters, whereas HS counselors (especially at prep schools) almost always write positive letters of recs. And I’m assuming colleges know that and put much weight to what professors say about you.

Ofc, keep your grades high. But more importantly, keep ur grades high in a rigorous curriculum. My GPA is below perfect but then I took major level courses and graduate level classes (I never took 1 level classes for first-years).

Hope this helps. Good luck!

@ifownly Thanks so much for your response. Do you think your research experience was an important factor in your application?

So anyone know anything about the waitlist?

update: email from dean and I’m out. good luck to everyone else.

can I see your essay by any chance?

@vesperan can you send me your essay and one more question, I can’t seem to find uchicago on the common ap. do you have any idea why?

Hi @vesperan,

I’m looking to apply for UChicago as a transfer for 2019 fall once application opens. Although I understand application will be slightly different this year with the whole change in test policies, could I look over your essays? I’d like to have some guidance regarding their standards. My reason for transfer is nearly obvious, community college, so I need to make sure my essay stands out for other aspects as well.
