i thought we might discuss what schools we are debating between. for me, it is uchicago and upenn. does anyone have any opinions? i visited both campuses when school was not in session, but i'm going to visit again this month. i really like uchicago and feel i would be a good match; however, my parents are pushing upenn because it is more prestigious. additionally, there might be more options available in terms of academics and social scenarios. does anyone have any advice for me? i appreciate your help...and for anyone else debating between uchicago and another school, post here and hopefully we can offer you a few suggestions.

Prestige is very subjective. Academically, Chicago is probably #1 in the country. But that is different from overall college experience. I have posted this link elsewhere, but it is worth repeating:

thank you for your advice...anyone else? where is everyone else choosing between?

I'm debating between Duke, Davidson/Wake Forest, and U Chicago.

1) Duke- Only 1.5-2 hours away. Very good biology program. Horrible financial aid. Great basketball team + active social scene.
2) Davidson/Wake Forest- 20/90 minutes from home. I don't like them quite as much as Duke or U Chicago, but financial & merit aid was very generous.
3) U Chicago- Probably the best fit for me academically. Still waiting on financial aid.

I'm trying to choose between Chicago, Rice, and Cornell. It's a very hard decision, and I don't know where I should go.

I got into cornell too, but for me, i need a city, so chicago trumps cornell. it takes forever to get to cornell's campus! and ithaca is really small and not very active.

I'm choosing b/w NYU Stern for Finance/Banking and UChicago Econ and I'm really torn. I'm from NJ so NYU is closer but Chicago is also a city and I just don't know what to choose...ahhhhhhhhh any advice?

i got into NYU too and would definitely choose UChicago. not that rankings are the be all and end all, but a UChicago degree definitely has a lot more weight. also, UChicago is in an amazing city, but it also has a campus. one thing i didn't like about NYU is the fact that it has NO campus whatsoever, it's just a bunch of buildings in washington square park. of course it is your opinion that counts, but for me, i like schools that have a city life and a campus life as well.

wait did you get into NYU CAS or Stern b/c CAS and Stern are completely different. Stern is one of the top finance programs in the country, ranked right after Wharton.

Ya, I disagree that Chicago is better than Stern, at least for undergrad...Stern UG will get you a lot more job opportunities, if that's what you're looking for. It may not be the most respected school, but it'll get you $$$.

Stern is indeed one of the most respected schools in business, definitely top tier

I'd say they are about equal, and the type who consider Stern consider Chicago and vice versa. Both are extremely well-respected.

The only catch there would be, if you go to Chicago, you could go many places after that. If you go to Stern, you can only go in one direction after.

huh? 10-20% of Stern graduates go into law school, many head to other grad programs (i.e. math.engineering), non-profits, etc. Both Chicago and Stern will be a royal pain for grad school because they are notoriously grade deflated. Also both are nationally well known and can place you at ibanks across the world, really.

It's important to remember that Stern is a professional school, on an undergraduate level, whereas Chicago is truly a liberal arts school, even if you prepare for a profession like business by majoring in economics. That's probably the most significant academic difference to take into account.

chicago is currently my first choice although i've yet to visit. mcgill is second, university of rochester third. i think mcgill would probably be a bit more fun, but i dunno. i kind of like chicago's strangeness.

i would probably chose u penn over chicago. i don't know that much about it, but it's very popular at my hs, and people who go there really like it compared to chicago where the people are pretty divided liking/disliking it.

well i guess i'm going off us news and world report's rankings. i don't know specifically about NYU's stern program (before i applied to NYU CAS i hadn't even heard of it) but NYU is ranked way below uchicago. that's all i was talking about, although i'm sure stern is great too, it was my impression that uchicago is a more respectable institution.

"i think mcgill would probably be a bit more fun..."

If you're the type that some on these boards are (looking down from their ivory tower, thumbing their noses at people who like to get wasted on weekends), then no, McGill will not be more fun for you. It is located in the biggest party city this side of Miami or Louisiana, but with a lower drinking age (18!). Of course, Montreal is also a tremendous center of culture and entertainment, and with the French/English diversions, you'd be sure to have an interesting experience...

I'm sorry, but I can't help but promote my city.

Ok heres my dilema. U Chicago vs. Emory U. Which one wins? I'll probably go into law.....

chicago! that is an easy one. my friends who visited emory thought that the kids were all snobby and rich. i've never been, but there is a trend...people from my school that go are all like that too. what am i supposed to believe? (and you can go into law no matter what you major in or what school you go to, provided you do well etc.)
