Hi,

Thank you so much for reading this.

I am looking at the nursing plan and notice BIO 93, 94, 99, 100, etc. are not listed on it but are required prerequisites of the courses listed (microbiology, physiology, anatomy). I am confused as to whether nursing students have these prerequisites waived or will need to fit them in somehow. The goal is to finish in three years, so I need to get that figured out to plan summer accordingly. If any nursing students know what hidden prerequisites there are, a list would be extremely helpful. I did get a 3 on AP Biology and was wondering if the GE course I receive credit for can be Bio 93 or even Bio 94 and advanced placement can be granted.

Thanks again,
Ryan

Hello,

I also applied to UCI’s Nursing Science major.

I’m going to assume that these prerequisites are included in the spots labeled “General Education.” Of course I may be wrong.

As for the Bio question, passing the AP Bio exam “earns one Biological Sciences course toward Category II of the UCI GE requirement” (see: <a href=“University of California Counselors”>University of California Counselors; ). The bio prerequisites for a Nursing Sci major are 97 (Genetics), 98 (Biochem), M122 (Microbio), M118L (Microbio Lab), E109 (Physiology), E112L (Physiology Lab), and D170 (Anatomy) (see: http://www.nursing.uci.edu/programs/bs/change-of-major/#2 ). Unfortunately, from what I can find, none of these fall under Category II of the UCI GE requirement (see: <a href=“Redirect Notice”>Redirect Notice; ).

Also, have you received your admission decision yet? I have some friends (different major) who were accepted today, so I’m going to be a bit worried if other nursing science majors have already received their decisions. If I may ask, what were your stats (GPA, SAT/ACT, ECs, etc)? Sorry for all the questions, it’s just that you’re the first nursing science applicant (besides myself) that I’ve run into.

I hope I helped you with your questions at least a little, and I thank you for any answers to my questions!

Hi,

Thank you so much for the response. It is nice to meet you, especially since we might be future classmates. My SAT was 2090, and I had a 4.33 UC GPA. I had 100 hours of hospital volunteering and probably another 4-5 other strong ex commitments elsewhere.

Thanks again for responding!
Ryan

About the decision by the way, I was accepted. I got into the honors program though so they came in February. Admissions are rolling through March 31. Most people haven’t received anything yet.

Thank you for answering my questions. Your answers were very helpful!

I’m not expecting to get accepted, unfortunately, due to my low GPA and ECs. My UC GPA was only a 3.5 and as far as ECs go, I only had 20 hours of volunteering at a single organization along with speech/debate competitions (Freshman and Sophomore years) as well as virtual business trade shows and competitions (Jr. and Sr. years).

I’m hoping the other aspects of my application can help make up for the areas in which I’m lacking. I’m taking 3 chemistry classes, 5 units each, at a Cal State University campus. My SAT is an 1840, which is a little low compared to the major’s average, but not bad. I also feel I wrote some fairly impressive essays, especially the essay for my Nursing Supplemental App, which was reviewed by my sister who has been a nurse for quite some time now. I guess I’ll just have to wait to see how the ad com and nurs sci department will decide to interpret the info on my app.

Thank you again for your help, and good luck to you on your future endeavors!
