Hi everyone!
My major is mathematics and my goal is to become a mathematics professor teaching at college. According to your experience, which university would be the best for mathematics major?
UCLA is pretty much the best in everything, but UCI is pretty comparable. It’s all about what you want out of an experience for undergrad, as teaching college will require you to go to grad school anyway.
UCLA has Terence Tao.
He is a huge celebrity in the field of mathematics. Think of him like “the Mozart of maths”.
Both are phenomenal schools for math but I do believe UCLA is generally seen as one of the best places to study mathematics in the planet (at least at graduate) and argued to be the best place for fields such as analysis and applied mathematics.
EDIT: I know USNews is not the best indicator but I just checked and UCLA is actually rank 1 or 2 in most math disciplines there (math grad ranking). The effect of having arguably one of the best mathematician in the 21st century in the department seems to really help.
