UCI (software engineering) vs USC (CS)

Which major in each college will have better outcomes and job, software engineering major in UCI or computer Science major in USC?

Are you a California resident? If so, you can likely attend UCI for four years for the same price as one year at USC.

At USC, once you are admitted into Viterbi, you are admitted into all majors. If you are unsure of your interests, that might make a difference.

UCI is a cleaner, safer community than USC but it is quiet on the weekends and doesn’t have the school spirit/social life that USC does.

Yes California resident. But which major is better in finding a job? Is computer science better than software engineering? My D is my first one going this direction in the family.

Sorry, I have one child at each school but neither are in those majors. I added the majors into your title so hopefully someone else with more knowledge about those fields can chime in.

Good luck!

Thank you

The major and school for CS doesnt matter as much as the actual skill you have. as far as I know, at UCI you can switch majors in ICS pretty easily so if software engineering seems too specific compared to computer science thats a possibility. USC does come with better connections, but again a lot of it will be on your kid working hard. UCI and USC are both amazing and you can get a good job from either - would def focus more on which school fits better for your kid. Best of luck!

USC CS is far better. I am not sure they are even in the same zip code.

USC has a very strong CS program, but USC costs over $81,000 a year, while the CoA for UCI is around $38,000 a year. So, for four years, USC will cost $328,000, while UCI will cost $152,000.

So you need to ask whether USC is $176,000 better than UCI. If paying an extra $176,000 isn’t a problem, or if USC is providing enough financial aid that it is around the same price as UCI, then USC is a better choice. Otherwise, UCI is a better choice.

Thank you. yes with financial aid, both will end up the same.

Then go with USC if the colleges are similarly affordable.

Both schools are good. CS is a slightly more respected degree than software engineering, just because the former is a bit more rigorous and the latter is a relatively non-traditional program, but you shouldn’t have a problem getting a job with either. CS leans theoretical, while software engineering is more practical.
