UCI vs Scripps for CS?

I’m kind of going in between the two, and for those who haven’t heard of Scripps, it’s a private women’s college that’s part of the Claremont consortium. B/c of the consortium, I get to take my CS classes @ Harvey Mudd (I’m excited by that prospect

Are both affordable? If so…

Do you like the big U or the small LAC? Do you like the idea of a Women’s College?

Mudd is a great option for CS.

I love the Claremont Consortium, so you know where my vote would be, but it really depends on what you are looking for.

@ClaremontMom, thank you for responding to my question (my post got cut off/not saved for some reason).

My parents are telling me not to worry about finances, so I guess it’d be affordable.
I like small college environment, and I really like the idea of a woman’s college.

I just visited both, but from the way the admissions reacted, they didn’t really like the fact that I wanted to major in CS? (the admission info lady’s attitude changed immediately when I told her that I wanted to major in CS, and when I asked for details, she was really hesitant :() Thus, I’m a little worried whether I should go to Scripps because I’m pretty dead-set on CS.

Have you been admitted to CS at UCI? If you really want to take courses at Harvey Mudd, I would talk to someone in their CS department. I suspect that since CS classes are in demand (including at UCI), you may have difficulty enrolling in some of the introductory courses that are required to major in CS.

The current policy is to prioritize an off campus major equally. That said …

Mudd is being impacted by the surge in CS majors. And it’s become a hot topic particularly in the last couple of weeks. Students were given an on campus presentation and Q&A while parents weee give. an online FAQ about it.

This is probably what admissions was reacting to.

I knew it was an issue but I had not realized until now how much so (the dramatic increase in majors was even more than they anticipated).

There is also a CS major at Pomona. They are having their own issues as well.

I believe you get to choose which campus to major on, but you should double check.

This problem isn’t unique to Claremont but It does give you something to consider.

Go to Scripps! With the 5C’s, you have 6000 undergraduate students. You can take CS classes at Mudd, the Keck Joint Science center, and at Pomona. There are many students at CMC, Scripps, and Pitzer who are CS majors, all schools that don’t have CS as a native major. They get their classes. Plus, students at Scripps are happy, as they are at the other 5Cs. Happy is good.

I think both schools are excellent choices. If you have an opportunity, I would try and visit UCI tomorrow for their annual spring open house. Each school will be providing info sessions on their programs.

I have to echo the comment by @ClaremontMom that both Mudd and Pomona are struggling with the demand on CS resources. My Pomona D is a junior Econ major who is trying to complete a CS minor. She has taken the introductory 3 classes but was unable to get into a class in the spring despite being a junior. Now she is registering for Fall of senior year and trying to get into 2 CS classes but doesn’t know if she’ll get in, again despite being a senior trying to complete the CS minor. I know this problem is not limited to the 5C’s. But bottom line ask a lot of questions about class availability and size wherever you go.
