UCI

Hi I really want to get into UCI and I wanted to comparemyself against those who got in. If you could tell me what ur student scores and ecs were stuff like that would really help. Also what UCI values or is looking for in a student? Ive gone through their page was just wondering from a student perspective

Hey there! Not a current student but I may be able to help.

UCI is not a super competitive UC campus (40ish% admit rate), but puts out a lot of science research and is more known for their sciences than their arts/english courses, from what I hear.

They really value test scores and your UC GPA. Those are probably the two main factors that they consider in an application. They like to see good extracurriculars, too, but you’ll be in good shape for the UCI applicant pool even if you only have a couple of ECs. Nothing spectacular needed, they just like to see involvement.

If you can give us a little more info about what you want to study, your GPA/test scores, and your ECs, people can give you personalized advice on what you may need to improve/ your chances.

@newkidnewtrix
GPA : 3.85 UC
SAT 1410 NEW SAT

I took around 6 APS passed 5 and retook the on i didnt at a community college and fulfilled 2/3 courses needed for that subject

ASB Treasurer 4 years leadersip

3 years basketball (stopped because of knee)

400+ hours volunteering at thelibrary (2 years) and hopsital 2( years)

HOSA two years its like a medical career club

Youth Council 1 year its like a citys board of goverment but made up of teens and we interact with our cities government but i dont know if one year looks bad

Comp sci but one of my friends got in undeclared for the same major no problem doing thaat

It looks like you stand a good chance overall. You are a statistical match!

Your ECs may be a little weak- I don’t see anything CompSci related in them. CompSci is an accessible subject, so I worry that the lack of demonstrated interest in the field might be held against you. Your volunteer hours are great, though!

I’m assuming you’re a CA resident. Are you part of an ethnic minority or are you a female in STEM? Any hooks like that?

@newkidnewtrix I’m taking a community college course or rop called cybesrsecutity which deals wiht computer science and protections softwares and sites my senior year it wasnt available before. I don tthink indian is an ethnic minority haha maybe the advanceness of many others of my race will be held against me

@newkidnewtrix in leadership i was also tech commisoner and part of the tech group which basically sets up sound systems speakers sund boards and does anything tech related like for exaple we MADE our own ligh up suits and we even made a website for voting made boxes to roll speakers on alot of things like that not directly related to comp sci but in the tech field

That’s pretty cool!

I think you would do well to take a moment to write out your ECs. All of the things that you just mentioned were pretty important and gave me a lot more insight into your involvement and interests than your original post!

Make a list of them that explains your involvement thoroughly, like you explained to me in your recent comments. Make sure you explain your involvement concisely. Save that list for the fall, and refer to it when you apply to colleges and are filling out your applications.

Remember, your reader has no idea of the scope of your involvements unless you tell them.
