ok..i have read almost all the debates between these two schools in this forum. But now i am in this kind of dilemma too. what would you pick, if you dont want to end up with taking an accounting job after graduate.
let me add another choice USC business admin.

my dream job is working as a consultant at company like BCG or McKinsey or as an Analyst or hedge fund manager in some VCs or in wallstreest

need your advice and input. thank you

I applied to Haas instead of econ, but my friend was in the same position two years ago.
He decided to go to UCLA biz econ, and landed a gig at goldman sachs right out of college, and he’s making a starting salary of 90k (crazy, right). i know ucb is like a huge name, but i feel like most of the companies looking for the people who want to go into business might look at haas first.

it’s basically what you do during your time in college that matters the most, since all three of those schools are pretty amazing - get those internships done, and you’ll have a much better time landing that dream job.

honestly, if i had the money, i would rather go to usc marshall and then get a minor in accounting, even though you might not want to take an accounting job, having that on your resume will really help.

somehow i feel like you’re set on berkeley though…

just visit both places, and go to the one that you like the most.

@thiscannotbe
thank you for your input:)
actually i am like 70 percent set on UCLA since it is cheaper for me.
other than that, bzecon is more useful with accounting minor and some business classes than pure econ in UCB for real life skill.
but if undergraduate major is not important for landing a job after graduation, then UCB has a big name than UCLA or USC
i have visited berkeley and ucla, to be honest i like LA more since i am a socal guy:) and UCLA’s campus is so beautiful.

the only way i will consider USC is, if i am going to get a big financial package from USC:)

And its a business school and it has one of the best accounting program in the country. and it is like 15 mins drive away from my home.

glad to know your friend’s story. he is really awesome.

I sir’ed to UCLA for biz econ a couple days ago - maybe i’ll see you there!

Hows ucla’s econ program for going into business?

UCB>USC>UCLA

Not by a ton though. Honestly, your internship experience will matter MORE than where you go when you have those three choices. I’d say that McKinsey recruits from UCB but NOT UCLA(or at least not as heavily)

I want to say that it should be somewhat EASIER to get a higher GPA at UCLA (party school) than at UCB(think engineers with sleeping bags studying all day in the lab) BUT employers realize this so you’ll have to work just as hard. Aim for a 3.5+ GPA. It is technically OK to average in your CC GPA, but try to avoid that if you can. You get diminishing returns after a 3.5(at your school), but BELOW a 3.5 can be BAD as the job board system actually will cut you OUT and not allow you to even apply.

@xelink thanks for your reply
but as i know. most of UCB’s recruiting opportunity are redirected to HAAS students only.
i know Mckinsey recruits from UCB. but it only recruits from HAAS not econ department. same as GS and other BB, IBD and MM.
i will try my best to maintain high GPA like in CC. but we have only one summer to intern before we graduate, right? it is the junior summer. at senior summer we will be almost graduate.

I work in an office with investors in bev hills… 5 UCLA grads, 1 Michigan, 1 Chicago, 0 UCB and 0 USC. I think location plays a big part. If you want to work in SoCal then go with UCLA, NorCal go with UCB. I’m surprised no USC in my office, might be an alumni networking thing.

Major doesn’t matter.
Major doesn’t matter.
Major doesn’t matter.
Major doesn’t matter.
Major doesn’t matter.
Major doesn’t matter.
Major doesn’t matter.
Major doesn’t matter.

A Poli Sci major with a 3.8 GPA from Harvard will usually edge out an econ major or a bus admin major from Cal.

Median pay for a Haas student upon graduation is only 2k higher than from an econ major. This should say something given the fact that to get into Haas you need a HIGHER GPA and more work experience than to get into econ, both of which matter.

As far as what SMC guy said about there being a location factor… this is certainly true. With so much said, most of the Finance and Consulting in the state of California is in or around the bay area.

Major doesn’t matter? can you provide sources? can a political science major gets a job in banking?

I got the same problem as u do. But after asking for certain peoples comments, i decided to go to Berkeley. One of fd who is a bear said “its just like comparing Harvard with Stanford”

A poli sci major from a TOP university with RELEVANT work experience and a high GPA can get a job in banking. Berkeley, UCLA and USC are all borderline between great and exceptional so I wouldn’t risk it in that case, you still need relevance(econ, business, math/stats, engineering, etc.) with respect to acquired skills.

This is coming from a guy I know who’s doing IBD at BarCap.

I c, work exp and gpa play a big part of it.

Nahh I talked to UCB Econ and they told me econ majors get the same opportunities as haas students. In terms of Banking that is, the recruiters take people from UCB Econ too. They told me it was a misconception that only haas students could land banking internships.

I heard haas students have their own parking slot, is that true?

No way that would be outrageous!

well. my balance just went to Berkeley a little.
i know the opportunities in LA are less than opportunities in SF since SF almost had all the ITs and VCs companies in there. i have been working as an IT guys for three years. so another of my choice is to go straight into an IT company. or IT direct banking or investment. well…this is so painful. why didnt i apply for haas in first place :(

@^ i heard haas students have a special priority parking slot over other majors.
