UCLA Chem 14 series vs. 20/30 series

This probably [ most likely? definitely? ] has been asked a million times around here. But what exactly is the difference between the chem 14 series and the 20/30 series.

I am majoring in neuroscience [ Med School/Graduate School bound ]. Here is the listed requirements from the website:

Chemistry and Biochemistry 14A, 14B, 14BL, 14C, 14CL, 14D OR 20A, 20B, 20L, 30A, 30AL, 30B, 30BL

what exactly is the difference?

you will be taking the 14 series for neuroscience.

the difference is that the 14 series of chemistry was created specifically for life science majors while the 20-30 series is for physical science/engineers. the 14 series does not go nearly as in depth as the 20-series, but it will be filled with pre-med/pre-health students which makes it challenging.

hope that helps

^ But is 20series necessary to have the knowledge for getting a 36+ on the MCAT or is the depth of 14 series enough?

Considering the vast majority of pre-meds are in the 14 series, I would say it’s adequate. The only reason that I would recommend taking the 20 series is if you think you might switch to a physical science major. But be warned, once you start in the 20 series, they won’t let you switch to the 14. However you CAN switch from 14 to 20. Counterintuitive, but true.

^ hm that’s interesting.

If I do end up taking the 20/30 series will there be things that I will have missed [ that are on the 14 series ]?

just take 14 series.

sounds good haha

is it worth it to do chem 14A at the summer institute?
