UCLA Class of 2018 Official Decisions/Discussion

@2018dad Thank you sir! Congratulations to your daughter, I’m sure you guys are all very excited (and rightfully so!). Definitely hoping for an Ivy League college. This process is as close to a meritocracy as I’ve ever been, which excites me greatly.

Rejected

Hehe, honestly I’ve decided I’m going to try to appeal to UCLA because there’s no harm in not trying at least. If I’m going down, I’m going down fighting.

Congratulations to everyone who got accepted! Just think, finally after 4 years of stress and hard work, it’s finally paying off! I hope where ever you guys go regardless of whether you got admitted or rejected that you’ll be happy and end up in a place that feels right for you!

Location/Person:
State or Country: San Diego, CA
School Type: supper small, public, mostly low-income (:
Ethnicity: Asian Vietnamese-Chinese
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: > $10,000
Hooks: i am not sure (:
Strengths: my AP scores (: since I applied for Nursing, definitely my recommendation letters helped A LOT
Weaknesses: my SAT score (: it is fairly way too low comparing to others’
Why you think you were accepted: hmm, my background?! i really appreciate that their school requires a supplemental application w/ a “Statement of Purpose” your reasons for choosing their Nursing program. I think I was able to shine because of my statement of purpose :). The fact that my SAT score is nowhere close to compare with others, but I still got accepted into their Nursing program speaks A LOT. I strongly believe UCLA is one of the most holistic :). Ahh, fun fact: I got rejected to UCI’s School of Nursing :). Hehe, UCI, that was your loss!
Other Factors: this is my 4th year living in the U.S. I was also enrolled in an ESL class my freshmen year :)! Crazy huh? :)

Daughter rejected. 4.4 UC GPA, very rigorous schedule throughout HS, possibly not enough ECs but really I think what she has is great. It’s not meant to be and that’s ok. Plus my grandfather is a lifelong Trojan, he might have keeled over if I told him she would be a Bruin  Congratulations to all of you who were accepted and to those who were not, just know that there is a better fit for you somewhere else. Happy Trails!!

Rejected BioEngineering! (Wasn’t my first choice, but still wanted to feel the love :frowning: )

SAT score is a 2120 (600cr740m780w), my
ACT is a 33 (36e34m30s30r33w) and 34 (35,34,30,34,33)
GPA is 3.8/4.38 (UW/fully W for UC). my b’s are in every semester of english (soph year it was honors, jr year it was uc approved honors)

Math 2- 790. Chem - 740. Bio M-790

took 1 ap as soph,4 as jr (highest in grade with 1 other guy) and took 10 overall (10-12) (2nd highest in grade)

bio, calc ab, chem, stats(i thought 2 maths as a jr was a good idea :/), ush (5,5,5,4,4). taking calc bc, phys b, macroecon, eng lit, gov.

Extra curricular wise I have a bunch of “regular stuff”: Varsity Swim 4 years, Captain. Varsity XC 2 years, Sectional Qualifier both years. Mock Trial Member (no room to mention), a bunch of tutoring at library and local elementary of underprivileged kids, soup kitchen charity stuff , year round club swim, jr lifeguarding. Math Club President. NHS, CSF

my more important EC’s are: Summer internship at Stanford Mechanical Engineering Department developing an inkjet printer that can print proteins. It’s pretty legit because im defined as a former lab group member. My work was extensive since it was almost a full length work day (9am-4pm) about 3-4 times a week for pretty much all of summer.

Summer Internship at U of Arizona Biomedical Engineering Department where I helped with a Ph.D’s project of analyzing the compatibility of human cells with the electrospun coatings on a stent. Ultimately led to a published Abstract.

my 1st essay was about how my visit to dad’s office, ap courses, and internships generated my interest in the field (talked about: failure is a teacher for engineering, confluence of different fields, importance of experience outside of school blah blah blah). 2nd essay is about how working at stanford helped me overcome my fear of public speaking/social anxiety.

other places accepted: UIUC (bioeng) UCSD (chemeng) UCSB (ChemEng) Cal Poly (BME) UCD (BME)

I know that technically ucsd and uiuc (even sometimes ucsb) can be considered better engineering schools than la, but it still stung alot! !especially knowing kids from my school with lower stats get in for engineering. But UCLA is jusst… UCLA!!! congrats to everyone who got in! Clearly deserved it!

Essays: For the first essay, I talked about how Cantonese was my first language, but how I had forgotten as I had gotten older. This caused me to “aspire” to relearn Cantonese, and because it wasn’t offered at my school, it led me to take Spanish (which I have found to have a passion for) and how I intend to utilize college as a way to explore various languages and cultures, etc. The second essay was about organizing my walk-a-thon to support the child abuse center, and how it has led me to grow as a confident, responsible individual (I talked about how, growing up, I was always shy and lacked self-confidence, but how this event I organized allowed me to realize my capabilities, etc)
