*******UCLA CLASS OF 2019 DECISIONS ONLY*******

Decision: Rejected

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2110 (750 CR,690 M, 670 W)
[
] ACT: 34 (35 E, 34 M, 33 R, 34 S)
[] SAT II: 760 Math II, 790 Physics, 720 US History
[
] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.97
[] UC GPA: 4.25
[
] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 2/329
[] ELC?:
[
] AP (place score in parenthesis): European History (5), US History (5), Physics B (5), English Language & Composition (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
[
] Senior Year Course Load: AP US Gov, AP Calculus BC, AP English Lit, AP Psychology, AP Art History
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): none[/li]
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Varsity Swim (all 4 years, lots of awards, Captain, placed in CIF etc.), Water Polo (Captain, Varsity 3 years, some other awards), Academic League Team (Varsity 2 years), Youth Group at my church and another at my school (VP at my church’s), Acolyte Service (6 years)
[
] Job/Work Experience: none
[] Volunteer/Community service: Boy Scouts of America (Eagle Scout, Junior Asst. Scoutmaster, Senior Patrol Leader, lots of service hours throughout)
[
] Personal Statement: one was about swim, and the other was about my family coming to the United States.

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[li]** Intended Major **: Mechanical Engineering[/li][
] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] School Type: Suburban Public
[
] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: M
[
] Income Bracket: $100,000-$120,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): none, just a white kid from a semi-affluent area.[/li]
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Not much obviously haha. I guess just that I am from California? Engineering was too competitive this year, I obviously didn’t fit the bill.
[
] Weaknesses: My SAT and SAT II Math scores were very low compared to the other applicants, but I was hoping my decent ACT would help; obviously not. I think I also didn’t have enough extracurriculars related to my major/didn’t show enough passion.
[] Schools were you accepted/waitlisted to? UCSD, UC Irvine (CHP), SDSU (Honors), and Macalester College
[
] Schools you were rejected from? UC Davis, Harvey Mudd, Cal Poly SLO, & now UCLA
[li] Schools you are waiting for? UC Berkeley, Cornell, Penn, Yale, and University of Michigan[/li][/ul]General Comments: I’m upset I didn’t get in as UCLA was the “easiest” school I had left to hear from, and I was already disappointed from not getting in to Cal Poly or Davis. I really don’t know how else I could have showed my passion, but I’m upset because UCLA was really a big dream of mine, and I really like the school a lot. Every time I imagined college, I imagined myself there. I also am upset because I now am not even that interested in Mechanical Engineering, I should have applied for Electrical Engineering if any engineering or some other physical science. Anyway, the decision is now made, so I’ll have to live with it, but it was certainly disappointing. All the advice I can give is to just show passion in what you do, and get involved in things that are related to what you wanted to do. It was just a tough year to apply with the other 92,000 applicants I guess now I just have to sell myself on UCSD.

ACCEPTED.
College of Letters and Sciences (English)

My stats disprove those who claim you have to be extraordinary so I’m happy to post them:

SAT I: 1950
SAT II: did not take
ACT: 27
GPA: 3.64 (school does not weight)
ECs: did internships in Southern Africa with UN
FA: Yes

Other acceptances: UCSD, UCSB, Georgetown, Mt Holyoke, Michigan, UVA

Decision: Accepted

Note: I’m an international student from Australia.

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2320 (CR 800; M 800; W 720) - second sitting
[
] SAT II: Math II 800; Literature 780; Chemistry 750
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): School does not issue GPA
[
] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Approximately 7/167 (Highly academically-selective school)
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[
] Senior Year Course Load: English Advanced, English Extension I, Mathematics (2-unit), Chemistry, Latin Continuers, Modern History (ATAR: 99.05)

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Piano (12+ years; awarded Associate Diploma in Music), Creative-writing (won Young Australian Writer of the Year; published in literature anthologies), School Band and Percussion Ensemble (3 years)
Note: my ECs may seem very weak, but keep in mind that in Australia we don’t have the same culture of extra-curricular participation and leadership in high school that the US has, so I didn’t have as many opportunities in terms of high school clubs, organisations, etc.
[
] Job/Work Experience: Unpaid internship at a law firm for 1 week
[] Volunteer/Community service: Study skills leader at school (18 hours); library monitor at school library (100+ hours)
[
] Personal Statement: First essay was strong; I spent a lot of time on it - I wrote about coming to terms with my identity as a Chinese-Australian. Second essay wasn’t strong because I didn’t have enough time :frowning: - I wrote about my long-standing and tumultuous relationship with the piano.

[] Schools were you accepted/waitlisted to? Accepted: UC Davis, UCLA, Mills college
[
] Schools you were rejected from? none yet, I’m scared!!
[li] Schools you are waiting for? 2 ivy leagues, Stanford, (hey go big or go home am I right), UC Berkeley, USC[/li][/ul]General Comments: Oh god, yes I cried. I was refreshing the portal all night. I sobbed like a baby before I told my parents. 4 years ago I would have never expected this – it’s so surreal, and I’m so blessed. Now anxiously awaiting the next few round of decisions, but here’s advice for anyone applying to colleges next year:

Obviously, rank doesn’t matter. My rank was 11 in my class when I first applied due to a B freshman and Junior year. My school sucks, lots of things suck actually. But I worked hard, and I guess the work ethic is what shined through the application. It doesn’t matter if you have the 4.0 or the 2400 (although that’s AMAZING and you are PHENOMENAL). What matters is that YOU shine through the application. Of course, they accept kids with certain stats so keep your grades high, take APs, study for the SAT, and work your tail off for all you want.

And always believe in yourself. I literally would not be here if I didn’t have faith in myself. It’s cliche, but it’s true.
