UCLA CLASS OF 2021 APPLICANT THREAD

Hi guys, I am a current student as well (MIMG 2020) and I think @10s4life gave a very good overview of the UC application process. I would just like to add that as an OOS student I can confirm that we do get financial aid (merit and need based) at UCLA;however, this isn’t true for the rest of the UC’s. Taking to a financial aid counselor, I was told that though the UC system has stated that it would not be able to afford to give OOS students finianial aid, UCLA has an additional source of income in order to support its OOS students.

Good luck with the remainder of the application process!

Your interpretation of that CA proposition 209 is misleading. It does not say what you say it does. Specifically, I do not see anywhere the CA proposition 209 mandating that colleges not look at the applicants’ names. Please give me proof of where it says this. I think you are wrong in your statement.

@cidjje I second your post. I have also seen many applicants with near perfect GPA and test scores get denied at competitive majors at UCLA and UC Berkeley. I mean I would have accepted them over others but I am not in charge of deciding admissions. IMO some applicants have to play this college applications game better or make sure to apply to more safety or schools that are not “reach” schools. Just know you might not get in if your major is very competitive even if you have very, very good objective stats. I know one person who wasn’t going to apply to UCSD, but that was the only school he got into after he was rejected by all other colleges even with his near perfect GPA and SAT from an academically competitive high school. I thought it was crazy but that’s how it is. Then you see some applicants with substantially lower – and I mean substantially lower GPA and test scores – get accepted.

The kid who got rejected from all schools other than UCSD is getting all As there, so clearly the kid was academically qualified. He was so qualified that even a US govt offered him a nice job waiting for him in the area of his major after his graduation.

Therefore, my advice to applicants with not so high stats is: Go ahead and apply because you have a chance.

My advice to applicants with near perfect GPAs and test scores is: Don’t be too sure or confident you will get in if your major is very competitive.

To everyone: Ultimately, the best college for you is the one that accepted you. Just like the best wife/husband is the one who selected you and loves you, or who selected you even if he/she did not love you that much. Lol

@websensation It’s holistic there are no guranteees unfortunately.

@websensation lol

Message to those applying to HSSEAS:
My roommate was invited to an invite only Engineering applicant event in 2015 and was told exactly how admissions into HSSEAS work because it is quite different than the holistic 2 reader review system, it’s points based. Because it is not released info on the UC website please PM me and I will explain it. It should give you a very good idea on your chances for engineering because almost the entire breakdown is GPA and test scores. Good luck!

@10s4life I am well aware that it’s holistic, but what you said is UCLA does not look at the applicants’ names. I have never heard anything like that, so I was curious; that’s all. UCLA takes everything into account, including your race, income, GPA, geographic area, test scores, ECs and essays. I do agree strongly with one thing you said though: Chance Me posts are useless and not helpful at all. I have seen perfect stats applicants get denied while I have seen applicants whom I would not have accepted were I an admission officer get in. The best way to deal with the college application/admission/rejection process is to tell yourself the college which admits you and you end up going to is the BEST college for you.

@websensation haha chance me posts are the biggest waste of time. That fact I remember reading from Ms Suns UC application blog.

@schoolemail34 @Fishnlines29 Eary January you will be getting an email that will have your UCLA applicant log in portal. That will be the place you need to check everything UCLA related.

Does anyone if UCLA offers out of state merit full rides?

@tacanadian when a pig is born with wings they will
They give 0 aid to out of state students unless you are either legacy or maybe like top 10 of 100,000 applications. Short answer: no.

lol thanks @blountwil2 I’ve only heard about the Regents Scholarships are those full rides?
